New Tires - Opinons pls

Postby Si » Tue May 03, 2005 11:42 pm

After some new tires for the supra beast,
225/50r16 for the front to be exact,

What are peoples thoughs on suitable tires? i dont have a problem paying ~$250 each if they are going to perform well and be suited to a 'aggresive' 'spirited' driving style.....

At this stage im kinda deciding between the Toyo T1S like i have atm, or possibly something of the dunlop sort. The toyos are approx 190each, the dunlops depending on the model $230-250.

Anyone had any experience with any off these or could reccomend any others to look into?

Thx

Si

Have a gander at the Toyo T1-R - very similar to the T1-S, but it has more rigid shoulder blocks. At least my Levin is definitely steering better on the T1-R 205/50R15 I have a the front than it did on T1-S 195/55R15 - some what less plow under steer on the Rosebank round about each morning on the way to work than before (more like goes around on rails now ;) ) The T1-R's were a bit more that the T1-S ($5 or $10 per tire more)

Ah just done some more searching, the t1-r is the replacement for the t1-s, info can be found on toyos au website not the dotcom.

The New Proxes T1-R is Toyo's new ultra-high performance passenger car tyre, superseding the Proxes T1-S. The Proxes T1-R utilises a newly developed silica tread compound with a ultra-high molecular polymer that provides improved grip levels on wet & dry roads and improved wear resistance. The directional tread pattern of the Proxes T1-R maintains the exceptional resistance to aquaplaning of the Proxes T1-S, combined with a new rib / block tread shoulder arrangement that improves dry cornering grip, improves resistance to irregular wear and reduces tread noise.

Apparntly they have not superseded the T1-S in NZ yet...

I've heard great things about the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 - found some good survey results on them somewhere I'll try and dig up for you.

Heres a link to specs etc in the meantime:

I think it also has some news articles on that page for awards etc - I'm gonna get these when I get my new wheels. :)

edit - Here is the link to the tyre survey I was talking about:

I have dz-101 direzzas on my car and they are marvelous. Wicked grip in the wet and quite quiet.

i'll vouch for them being a damn good road tyre.. but i wouldnt put them within earshot of a circuit if you want them to last any decent length of time...

i'll put my faith in Khumo Escta Supra 712's have had them on my cars for a number of years. Good balance between grip and wear when used in spirit ;).

Just got a set of these all round and I agree.
Noticeable improvement from the 901.

I have just put 2 Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD 3's (205/40/17) on the front of my 20V FX and moved some Dunlop FM901's to the rear.

The 901 were fantastic, but have worn quickly. I was told the diretezza's are not as good as the Goodyears by a few people, so I went for the Goodyears. The Goodyears seem to grip better and the car seems to brake better but I am yet to give them a good thrashing to see how they go when they are really hot.

Price wise goodyears were $220 each fitted and balanced at Tony's in Wellington and they wanted $180 each for the Dunlops.

for price/wear/grip I would go the gt radial :D
I got them on my car and they seem to hang on pretty good, even with my acceleration they dont spin anywear like when I had Khumo 711's, as for toyo t1's they were absolute crap on my car, I could just keep on spinning through the gears with those tyres!!
