Its quite often the VVT pulley. Possibly an injector, or valve clearances.
Hydrolic lifters? Its cam on bucket.

Try changing oil first. I've seen a couple 20v crap out from scummy old oil.

Use an engine flush first

he means it has no hydrolic lifters, dont worry about it. If i had a pic of a 20v engine i could show u where the vvt pully is. It'll get loud but it shouldnt be a big problem, just noisy. By the sounds of it too, ur prolly not mechanically minded, so go see a decent mechanic to get it changed.

20V's dont normally need the tappets reset. Ever. unless you modify something like cams etc.

ur dead right there matt

there is a test u can do to check the vvt pulley noise, its been posted before

earth out the pink wire with the black strip.
if noise quitens or goes away then its your vvt pulley.
the connector is located above the exhaust on the r/hand side of the motor (your left hand when your standing at the front looking towards the windscreen).

also on a Blacktop I had the cam belt tensioner crapped its self and caused the belt to become very slack and make a tapping noise. Something to check if the VVT pulleys ok

yes the tensioners on those do fail, if doing the cambelt ALWAYS do the tensioner on the black top. ALWAYS

Could a cam belt tensioner make a knocking/tapping noise as well if its buggered?
