NO Electrics unless above 3000rpm.?

Postby 1598cc » Thu May 05, 2005 6:18 pm

Levin started playing up ; the rev counter, dashlights, windows, starter motor etc wont go BUT if i turn the key to on, roll start the car, itll fire up and drive with no electrics then if i drive above sorta 3000rpm then everything will work . kinda weird.

ive check the fuses on the batteryand the ALT one has blown out but i know why thats happend ; so i connected it back up rugged to see if it fixs it but no joy..

any other places to look

cheers

Alternator brushes bung? Check the alternator output with a multimeter and that should give your answer.

So the car wont start under it's own battery power?

Buggered if I know why people try and solve electrical problems in a car with a battery that is obviously no good.

If that battery wont start the car, get it tested or buy a new one.

And a 20 min spin round the block will not charge up a really flat battery.

The reason everything will go above 3000rpm is cause the alt will kick in and power everything up.

definatly sounds like your altenator brushes and and some other things are stuffed, happens over time.
Get it rebuilt, only costs a little over $100 (chevettes one did anyway)

Matts theory above seems pretty conclusive actually, try a battery you KNOW is good.
