4K Mods & Suggested Rev Limit

Postby Muzzie » Fri May 06, 2005 12:21 am

82 Starlie turned race car, got given a 3 inch tach for it and was wondering what I should set the shift light too.

What will a standard 4K do in terms of revs, obviously they aint rev happy but will 6grand kill them or what.

Also, whats some cheap basic mods I can do to get some more go out of it, mainly in terms of acceleration more than top speed. It's got a free flow exhaust on it and it's entirely stripped.

Opinions? Suggestions?

In my experience with the K series motors, unless you have uprated the valve springs it will loose power up in the revs before it hits valve bounce.

Set the shift light to just before where it feels it is loosing power.
As long as you dont hit valve bounce it should be right.

(I have seen a 2K last more than 15 minutes on valve bounce)

6krpm wont kill a 4K!! You'll get valve bounce after 7 but the standard bottom end will take at least 8k

Valve bounce is fun. Go the mighty K. Even a 7k will rev high and have a good valve bouncy time.

It sounds so much more brutal than hitting a rev limiter on a newer car... guess thats cause it is haha.

Yeah, I frequently rev mine to 6500  no power up there, but what the hell.
Mods - extractors make a world of difference, an air filter of some description, then you get into the more big dollar (comparatively speaking  ) mods - side draught carb/s, reprofiled cam, up the compression, porting radda radda.
They seem to handle a bit of forced induction too, plenty of people have done turbo conversions.

Ok, ill set the shift light (as small and as insignificant as it may be   ) for 6grand and see how that goes.

But what about in terms of cheap mods to make it accelerate quicker. I'm not on a track where top speed is reached, so I need get up and go :)

What Mmm, boost just said; extractors, exhaust, filter. It's still only a 4K though.

Get a Weber 32/26 off an old Ford as well, they aren't hard to fit with an adapter, are damn cheap, and go pretty good.

Extractors are like $120 from Coby, and despite what people say they arent THAT bad.
Lighten your flywheel, thats cheap and will let it rev freer.

Apparently (this is just what I was told when trying to buy them recently by several places), Coby is no longer making extractors for a 4K.

I ended up getting some custom made at Magoo and it only cost $180.

the coby extractors are better than stock sometimes, depending if your setup is like the factory ke30, when it goes 4-2-1, the cobys are 4-1,
i have a set of cobys im trying to get rid of.

the carb your after commonly comes on the cortina 2ltrs, and just stick a ramflo filter on top, and you'l notice some gains.

Dunno how much diff extractors would make on mine, the exhaust from the manifold back is a piece of pipe :) Coinceidentally it's F**KING loud!

Where do I get a flywheel lightened and how much is worth? And aint they prone to coming apart? Don't really wanna lose my legs.

Bear in mind on the race track this car very rarely goes below 4thousand RPM. And when it is, it's in the pit bay :)

Getting rid of that factory manifold should make a difference though...

You'll notice a big difference, as the stock manifold is still quite restrictive

replace consumables if need be (fuel filter etc) new leads and plugs if it needs it, extractors, pod filter, some good cold air and if you can be $&#$% whip head of mill it some *couedge of spark plug holegh* (j/k) (good to do at same time as consumables oil etc).

made my old 3a go a bit better when i used it. well it more or less just sorted out alot of the niggles in it flatspots etc.
