Hey dude.

Contact Warwick, (Mr Revhead) he can get you some pretty good prices on genuine toyota and TRD parts.

Have a look at this thread:

Warwick is away until next Tuesday so unless you want to wait for him to get back you wont have a car until then.

Nothing wrong with clutches that BNT have.

Trade parts are all good, and I'd go for a stock clutch. Shouldn't set you back any more than about $300 for the kit.

Yea I can vouch for trade parts aswell. Went through them a couple of times for different things and they are not too bad to deal with.

I'd go see Autoclutch and get a custom kevlar/kevlar one, with slightly upgrade pressure plate.. shouldn't be to expensive.. under $500 anyway.

Well stock meaning stock replacement, 3SGTE clutches are already fairly large and I have seen stock ones survive repeated trips to meremere without slipping.
I personally wouldn't buy a puck/button clutch as it will be harder on your driveline, engine mounts etc and will be a prick to live with and if you can afford the extra couple hundy then Kevlar like what snwtoy said is also a good option.

hey i've contacted both trade parts and also auto clutch...they were both really good to deal with and knew exactly what i needed....auto clutch one was quite a bit more expensive.
auto clutch = $702 but that includes bearings as well...
trade parts = $280...(not kevler)
im told kevler(excuse the spelling) should last 3 times the distance so it might be the go......

Another thing i've got the oppertunity to work on the car myself as i said its my mates workshop and he said if i wanted to i can use all the tools there and also get help from the mechanics....
any opinions would this be to hard to do for a fresh beginner..??
.....if i do the job then i'll definately take photos and post them for ya all incase anyone is interested....

also does anyone know.... do i have to remove the engine to replace the clutch i havn't asked the question yet to the boys in the workshop i thought i'd ask here first.....

If you are only a beginner I'd suggest you leave this job to the mechanics. As far as I know you will need to remove the motor in order to replace the clutch as it's a big job since it's 4WD.

AFAIK this should be the same kind of job as in a 205 in wich you need to remove the engine to get around the transfer case and remove the box to replace the clutch.

Just a quick word of warning, if you or anyone else thinks you can do the clutch without pulling the engine the only person you'll be fooling is yourself :D
But if you have access to a well equipped workshop like you said with help on hand and you have a reasonabe mechanical knowledge than you can't go wrong, you should be able to get a kevlar clutch cheaper than that, IIRC All_Fours was telling me that Partmaster can do them, at least the one in Henderson can.

Ps. pulling the engine is also a great time to do things like the cambelt etc.

Yep keen as a bean for some piccies. Let us know of any major bastards you have on the way :)

I've done 4wd clutches without taking the engine out, but never done one one a 3sgte.

You have to take the engine out to do the clutch, and is a major PITA to do. Allow 20hrs for a skilled mechanic to do the job, double that if you're doing it yourself for the first time. You may as well do the cambelt while you're there.

The easiest way I know of to remove the engine is to drop the suspension & cross member and remove the engine out the bottom, trying to remove it from the top is a major exercise in frustration.

You can do the clutch without removing the engine Ive done it twice on a st205. Just unbolt, subframe gearbox mounts and transfer mounts where bolted to engine, support engine and lower it on about 15 degree angle and with driveshafts disconected pull away from engine and lower. You need two trolley jacks and some stands to sit car on. If your good you can even do it by yourself. I got my missus to pump the jacks to help locate everything though. Its a job I would,nt undertake if you have not had much experience in this kind of thing. You need a bit of patience too. Oh yeah not sure if suspension subframe is removable on Caldina like St205. Goodluck anyway.

Peice of piss to do....remove engine and box that is.

I,ve done it in 15 hours, which includes converting an mr2 engine to suit(they are different).

When removing the gearbox just twist the transfer case downward then pull front out first. nice and easy

Postby u4dina » Thu Oct 20, 2005 3:13 pm

sorry ya all....yea this job got done....

Its not to hard actually.....you do have to remove the whole engine..or at least i did....and the best way to remove is drop the engine instead of trying to lift it our from the bonnet....cos the abs system gets in the way....also having help when putting the thing back together cos its a real *&^*....
i got the clutch kit from tradeparts...who were helpful....

if anyone needs help let me know i'd be happy to share my learnings sorry havn't updated i've been flate out at work....
