wouldnt getting a carib's lower end attached work?

i really really dont know how you do it etc...

but the rear end of a carib's lower half is all thats realyl needed... and gearbox..

so you would require the rear hubs, brakes... possibily suspension... diff... etc....

then need room for a driveshaft.

man.... what a waste of money ^_^, just go buy an ae86, and spend a fortune on suspension mods, and wala, youd have an ae111 rwd.

AE86 is rare and cool, but a AE111 rwd is just $&#$% awesome.

If you were going to mod the rear end of the AE111. Would it not cost much the same to simply space-frame (tube-frame??) the rear end for custom everything??

Does anyone else wish that Toyota had kept making Levins/Trueno's in a RWD configuration? I do.

Sounds like a fun ( but expensive ) project. Good luck. :D

Disclaimer: long ramble ahead. :)
EDIT: Disclaimer: This is only my theory on why cars are FWD these days, not proven facts. :D

If you got a whole bunch of engineers together, and told them to design a sports car, I very seriously doubt it would be FWD. :D
Its more to do with making a sporty version of an existing 'base model' car.
There is only one reason why companies make FWD sports cars, eg. Levins, type R, etc.
Its because it helps them sell the base models. EG. John smith sees a nice BZG or type R, and thinks Oooh! thats a nice car. But I cant afford it. So he goes and buys the lower specd version for considerably cheaper.

I suppose also because they can use the same chassis/platform for the economy car and the sporty one, which saves cost. If they had to make a new RWD configured chassis just for the performance model, it wouldnt be economical. Making the budget models RWD too wouldnt be economical either I suppose.

I suppose Nissan did this with the skylines and silvias though. Which is awesome! But if it drives up the prices of even the base models, some customers would go elsewhere. Especially since some people dont even know which are the drive wheels anyway. :D

I mean look at what 'type R' did for Honda. Now every honda fan boy wants to spice up their 80s civic with type R components, which they wouldnt be able to do if type Rs were made RWD. Noone would be able to fit a VTAK system into their civics, if all of the decent engines were used in RWD applications. :) So it helps brand popularity I suppose?

A lot of people are quite brand loyal when it comes to cars. So if they can get people into hondas at an early age, they might have a customers in the making later on.
Also it means that after market parts made for the sporty versions can probably be fitted to the el cheapo model too. So it keeps everyone happy! Except those of us who like to drive looking out the side windows, instead of the windsheild. :D

But I still think it sucks. :( AE111 RWD would be fun. :D

thats strange...

i was under the impression that they changed from RWD to FWD to cut production costs down (as it costs more to make a RWD car) to make new cars more affordable to the average consumer...

i have also considered the option of RWD my ae101, 5-7 grand tops i reckon it would cost me doing most of it myself. my mate has a 101 fxgt rally car running a RWD 3SGTE and i wouldnt attempt that unless you had a mission masters ticket! i looked at using the rear end from a 101 4WD carib wag, T50 etc. main head f**ks i could see with it would be

fuel tank
tunnel,
mounts,
front hubs?,
poss wiring shorten/length
dizzy/firewall,

fully doable to a keen punter, i heard someone has already done this somewhere, anyone know who? i was thinking a turbo on my blacktop after that would go down better than the mrs on my bday.
currently beating - AE101 Sedan, blacktop/6spd, tein coilovers, braided lines, cup holder, and every other bloody thing possible.

The problem im stuck on most at the moment thinking this through is the steering rack...
but then again I have tried not to think about this too much, as then i get very keen and I already have too many projects and not enough space

Adapt the entire front crossmember from a RWD car into it, with the rack already mounted to it. Solves a lot of issues in one go, just match up the track and preferably the location of the strut towers although these can be moved if they have to.
