Quit your bitching, no one said owning a car was cheap. We should have had emissions laws year ago to bring us inline with the rest of the world. Cats are rediculasly efficient when they're warm - reducing pollution by some stupd figure like 98%.

Interesting fact: In a 10 minute journey, 95% of your cars emissions are made in the first minute.

umm dude you just totally destroyed your original point... if i make 95% of my pollution in the first minute and the cat doesnt work properly till its warm then whats the point?...... another hundy bucks every year or so just get that last 5%?

Because a lote more pollution is created if you dont have one at all, considering most driving is done in more than 10minute lots :roll:

cat laws should have been introd when they canned lead petrol! :wink:

there comes a point when big, is too big.

you need to keep the velocity up. to big a pipe can stall the gas flow. on a 1600cc, 2.25 is about right.
so as far as the factory exhaust goes, its not bad at all.
id fit a highflow cat, and leave it at that.

I would recommend servicing the car first which consist of engine oil (full synthetic) and oil filter change. Then spark plugs with air filter, maybe new fuel filter… get injector cleaners… check the compression ratio on each cylinder to check if all a running ok. Basically check if the car is up to spec wise on performance from a standard engine. OR if you do have extra $$ then do a dyno tune which will also let you know what you current power output is like before adding mods so you can know if there are any improvements on the power with the mods you have added…
Then you can do more mods like exhaust, ECU, extractors, and so on…

my mate (from magoo) told me it was pre-96' cars that will be exempt..
he better not be lying to me :lol:

high flow cats = $$$$$$$

at the end of the day your not really gonna gain crap all putting an exhaust on your 20v, if you want more torque, get a car with more cubes...

high flow cat doesnt always mean go buy a flash new one... a cat from a bigger capaicty engine is a good place to look....

But since the govt has put off the new emissions law who cares.

If you wanna spend money get a 2.25" press bent exhaust made up, fit 2 large resonators and a straight through muffler at the back. If they ever introduce serious emission laws just get a flange welded into your exhaust so you can stick the standard one in when you go for a warrant.

If they were serious about emissions they would put cat's on aircraft exhausts :roll: :lol:

The 20v trueno./levins etc will never have the low down torque of a 2litre Celica (even my old 1986 one felt like it had alot more low down than me 20v), however the levin is still quicker (if u thrash it) my 0-100 took 8.6 in the celica, takes 7.4 in the levin.
The Celica doesn't really have any top end grunt.

Is 425Nm of torque at the wheels considered good or poor for a stock standard 20v black top then??? :? Because I don't know what others are like....

Nop... pretty sure it's 425Nm... I had a dyno run at Torque Performance here in Auckland... I will scan it later on and post it on my homepage....
I have showed the sheet it to DVSMR2 and BZGEE...

how much boost u running? and what sort of shot of nos?

thats alot of torque considering late 3sgte's are pushing 304nm...

i think someone entered your final drive ratio / gear ratio's in incorrectly

I have done about 30 dyno runs on my car... all of the are the same or near abouts... mind you when i first got my car it was 345Nm with no mods...

Now just air filter, intake chamber and exhaust...

My 20v is a N/A so no boost... and I am not a fan of NOS too...

Maybe I do need to scan my result to show that I am explaining it correctly...

I will try to compare them to my mates then...

Also i will be going out to tonights meeting at 9pm on the hills in Auckland... so I can show it to you guys out there...
