noob intake questions

Hi.
What exactly is this: (I know its dirty )

In my 92 celica gt

My guess is that it is some kind of sound muffling device?
My question is can I safetly take it off? The problem is if I take it off there is nothing left behind it, i.e. a straight hole to the pipe which would result in air bypassing the filter furthur down. Is there something I can cover the hole up with? Or maybe I am mistaken and I shouldnt take it off?

it's an intake reasonator, why do you want to take it off?

btw, I don't suppose your celica has manual wind up windows does it? Just asking because it appears to have a 3sfe engine

Hi. No actually its a NZ New model 92 gt with a 5S-FE 2.2 litre engine, automatic windows. (weird ehh)
I just figured if I took it off it might change the sound a little (louder?) which would keep me content enough not to ruin it with a pod filter

yeah will make it louder, but then you will risk getting shit up your intake, unless you block up the hole

a piece of plastic cut out from the bottom an ice-cream container then glued/duct taped on

duct tape will be fine, had a old car of mines intake taped up for about 6 months, was still on perfectly afterwards

dont use electrical tape though because after ages it can go shitty

This is a resonator.
It looks like it is between the airfilter and the throttle body - this means that it is there to help make more power.
If you take it out you will more than likely lose some power at one or several points in the rev range.
If you can try to fit a larger one there.
Do A Google search on Helmholtz - you will learn why it is there and how it helps make power.

Yup, I 100% agree with Kinloud.
They are there for kinna "air reserve" for ur engine at certain rpm. From experiment, bigger are better. But too big, won't much different. So, the factory ones are optimal size and you don't want to go anything smaller than that. If it a daily driven car..(normal driving) probably you can't really feel anythnig different... mainly different are when the car is going hard/high rpm.

Also, there is no real harm to the engine to run without it as long as all the air going into the engine been filter.

I think Performance Car mag or Fast Fours did an article on this a while back. They tested different sized units on a n/a vehicle and dyno'd the car after each change. It was quite interesting to read. cant remember what issue it was or what mag.

Hot4s did this test. They found a bigger resonator improved lower end torque/power. It was on a mitsi mirage 1500 SOHC. They tried everything from a 600ml coke bottle up to a 5L container. According to their dyno the 5L container was very similar to a 2L (??) bottle and improved the low end by around 7% (not exact, I might look this up when I get home...) over no resonator at all.

wow thats really amazing, i take back anything i said about them mostly being pretty much worthless, i knew they affected power slightly but 7% isn't to bad

some wont have any improvement at all... so theres no point rushing out and sticking one on your car!

Yeah. But 7% is from a really large container...
They found the best general result (space/size vs results) was from the factory one which was a bit more than 600mls or something.

And the car was a mitsi mirage with a grand total of 60kW or something like that. 7% is a lot for that car, but as stated, every car is different.

In fact they suggested that there could be better results found by using different shapes rather than volumes.
