What Lowering Springs on your DX????

Postby LowNLost » Thu May 26, 2005 4:06 pm

was after some aftermarket lowering springs for my 81 4 dr wagon .
The shock guy got some KIng springs and DObi springs in that were suppost to fit . But have a different bottoms and don't fit into the lower platform properly .
Does it need be modified ?? or is there something out there that fits straight in ???
Do all the ke70s have the same springs ??

cheers

Its hard to find aftermarket replacement springs, since yours is a wagon you only need front springs obviously.

King Springs will supply lows for the front, but they are only a 30mm drop, you can get superlows, but everywhere will tell you that you can't get them, so they are hard to find.

Easiest way is spend $60 and get the standard springs compressed 65mm, they will stay captive in standard shocks and ride fine.

Also, there are two different front spring types in the KE70, some have the same size top and bottom coil, and some have a reduced size bottom coil.

It's only the 1981 which has the smaller front coil, so just get some struts out of a different KE70

Mr pervert be right , ive owned 8 dx corollas and it wasnt just 81 that came out with a tapered spring they had them rite through , it just depended on wot model it was ie gl , dx etc.
Best idea is to get a set of kings and get them compressed an extra 35 mm as the standard springs would more than likely be screwed from teh 20 + years of abuse 8)

Yup, thats the best way, although in time you'll be in for some serious spring-sag. Kings sag as it is, compressing them would make it worse.

I compressed my standard springs 65mm all round, and took a coil off the rear, and I've done about 10,000km now, and they are still riding great...

Yes, Kings do a front coil for both reduced and non-reduced.

Any Mag & Tyre place should be able to supply these for you, only 'low' ones though, so a 30mm drop is all you'll get.

Unfortunately I've only got the non-reduced ones spare, I have a set of reduced ones but I need them as my spare if I ever want to put mine back to factory, sorry.

A set of Kings for the front will only set you back $200.

They must be the wrong ones then, check the part number and then compare it to what you are supposed to have using the catalogue at www.kingsprings.com

They should be KTFL-33 if they are lows, or KTFS-33 if they are standard height.

Well just get some different struts then, can't see it being too much of a problem.

I wouldn't get compressed springs, because it's pretty expensive, and the ride is still the same, ie not any stiffer...

See with compressed springs, you have to get them compressed for about $200, then another $300 for certification, so thats more than proper king springs, so yeah.

Untrue, Bellamy & East in Chch compress them for $60 a pair, so that makes $120 for all four.

Furthermore, you do not need compressed springs certified, this is fact. Try ringing any certifier you want and ask, I personally rang quite a few, and they all said no, they don't need certified.

King Springs just don't go low enough.

the newer struts are same as ae85/6, I got short AE86 8KG/mm TRD springs thru mr. revhead $210 pair new! dont bother with king springs, they dont make them low or stiff enough.

On my old ke70 station wagon, I got the springs compressed. I wouldnt recommend it as they just werent stiff enough.

You could try a set of adjustables. Not the complete adjustable type, but the ones you modify to suit your existing strut. That way you can have hard springs up front, and as low as you want. Try searching trademe and you will find some sets.

WTF mate, of course it needs certifing!

Have a look in here http://www.lvvta.org.nz/CertThresholdSc ... il04V3.pdf

It says the springs must not be HEATED or cut.

C'mon man!

That is meaning no backyard jobs.

Cut springs are not legal, and can't be certed.

But compressed springs are legal without certification provided they were professionally compressed.

I'm inclined to trust every certifier I rang over what you think is true, backed up by an online document with barely any clarification.

You'll also notice in your document it indicates that "replacement springs must not be heated of cut", now if you compress your factory springs, then that means they aren't "replacement springs" are they...so that doesn't apply...???

Don't bother trying to change my mind, I'm not going to, and I doubt you are either.
