Postby 6155 » Thu May 26, 2005 7:31 pm

Hi guys!

the auto gearbox in my 99 caldina Gt-T is dead!

It wont let me get in reverse + my 3 and 4 dead, when Im in 3 or 4 gear the rev just goes up!

what are my options? rebuild or just get a manual gearbox?

How much would it cost? how should I go to?

Thanks guys

options are get and 2nd hand auto box and straight swap.or recondition your current one. reconditioning will be more expensive but more reliable then a 2nd hand one
want a ae86, dont want to pay 8 grand for one
have to settle for my ae92

I presume you've checked the fluid levels?

It might not be the transmission, could be the computer or even just the relays.

As for a manual conversion, my advice is to forget that idea, theres a lot more involved like the ECU, clutch ABS/TRC/VSC computer and even the rear diff is different, besides the cost of the gearbox is going to be fairly expensive to begin if you can find one.

I have all the spare parts available that you might need to replace anything that's broken on yours for a reasonable price, came out of a '97 with 46k on the clock.

hmm, I would rebuild, for reliability and future cost savings, and besides, you can launch an auto........
MAD Industries Limited
'97 GTT auto, -under rebuild, again.
the faster you go, the quicker you get there...

yea, drop into a good trans service shop. as said above there are several things which may cause the issue- you dont wana change the box to find it was the ecu!
assuming of corse that fluid levels ahve been checked as well.

Have you checked your ecu codes??

how / when did it die? what happened? describe circumstances..

I may be able to help.. I've done a bit of work on the electrics surrounding the ECTS in the GTT, and there is a "limp home" mode..

hi guys!
I m in Auckland
it just happen. put it into drive as normal, 1st 2nd gear ok then 3rd the car started shaking and then the rev just keep going up, is like in a manual car you step on the clutch with out letting off the gas.
Then when i got to work, try to reverse and park. put it in R there is the reverse sound but no drive!

I am thinking of taking it to toyota to get it check out! is that a good idea?

Yea, you could try toyota, or there is(/was) a few trans places up poana road and also around the onroad testing station. all of these are local to each other if you decide to go for a quote.

Nope...sometimes they can slip for some stupid reason. I did that in teh supra when I half toasted my second gearbox. Bent over to change channel on radio or something and accidentally brushed against the stick and it just went straight through to reverse :?

Needless to say there was alot of scary noises coming from gearbox...
