How low can a 1983-1987 Camry?

Postby lowridding » Mon May 30, 2005 9:24 pm

Lowriders need to be LOW.
Can i lower a 1983-1987 Camry to around 40mm off the ground?
Also what engine conversions can be done to this model. i am thinking about a lovley v6 thats been dipped in crome and ever so shinney!

One more thing, under nz law can i extend the rear wheel base 25-50mm using spacers?
If it aint broke, help it along.

To go fast is fine, to look good is ok, but only a fool tries to do both at the same time.

twin turbo, the member who posted on my poll, he pm me a few times.

i was actually thinking about air-bag suspension. Get a kit from the states. 40mm isnt legal? i thought the lowest it could be was 40mm?

40mm maybe a bit low. But if this was going to be a show car, it can use coil-over adjustables. Like on the high octane sw20.

would that not work?

100mm is legal limit on an un-certified car.

If you get it certified you can go as low as you want provided it is deemed safe.

Best way is to fit some coil-over suspension. This will enable you to go pretty damn low, and is easily certifiable.

40mm off the ground on an old school is pretty low, the chassis seems to sit a lot higher up than newer cars, so the wheels are going to be a fair way into the arches, so it will need flared.

Other way of going would be compressing super-low King Springs, and getting your shocks machined short enough to keep them captive, this can all be done and certifiable, if done right.

So i can go 40mm without getting air suspension.

I found some sweet 13inch mini-lites cromed and also a sweet set of gold wire rims.

So on the camry if i get it certified and deamed safe (btw what do i need to do that) it can be 40mm!!what about if i cut the rear arches off and fabricate a new set cause i want the rear wheels moved out 25-50mm to make it look wider at the back.

would spacers be fine or do i need longer axles?
If it aint broke, help it along.

Cheers mate
What do you recomend for this set-up as japanese low-riders are not common apart from mazda utes.

If you can afford it, get some adjustable coilovers, as close a fit as possible, and have them professionally adapted to fit.

Cut the guards off, bolt on some flares, and use bolt on spacers for a wider offset in the rear, making sure it doesn't put too much stress on anything.

All of these modifications, including removing the old guards, will need certified to be legal...

How much would you charge to do the work?
Or
Do you know anyone who could do the work?

Haha, nah man, I'm no lowering business, I just love hell low cars...if it was my car I'd do it the dodgy way, and forget about certification, but I'm not going to recommend being stupid...

Have a talk to some local suspension places, I'm not really sure what kind of place exactly would do the work, but they should be able to point you in the right direction. Its important to use people that really know their shit when it comes to getting things certified, as I said, it needs to be safe.

40mm clearance is going to make it difficult to drive everyday, I had a car that sat 40-45mm at the crossmember, it was an issue to drive...and being a VR4 didn't even look that low.

Front coilovers are easy to make and stocks in aucks can provide most parts needed to sort it out. Just need it welded up then what kind of suspension does the camry have in the rear?
