feedback on my proposed exhaust AE101 20V

Postby Boldy » Tue May 31, 2005 2:29 pm

Hey there wouldn't mind getting some opinions for a free flowing exhaust for an AE101 20V. I've read up on everything I could find on toyspeed plus a few other toyota forums.

In terms of size I think the general consensous has been 2.5" is too big, 2.25" is the max you would want to go, and seeing I won't be doing much else to the engine except for the intake and exhaust, a mandrel bent 2.0" should be fine.

I've also read on other threads that the pipe which goes over the sway bar and X member is restrictive, I would like to replace this also. On the diagram this looks like the section from B to C (can someone confirm). Is it also worth replacing the secondaries (A to B)? I've heard the extractors are pretty good, and don't really need replacing.

Gonna be losing the cat (but keeping an eye on upcoming legislation), so parts C and D will just be straight thru. That section from C to E will basically be replaced with two resonators.

Not too fussed on keeping the twin pipes either. As far as I know the second only opens up at high revs anyways, but a 2" all the way should be able to cope with a N/A 1600 with out the need for another pipe. Any comments on this?

Appreciate any feedback
cheers

From memory A to C is one piece so you will have to replace the secondaries the whole way through to the cat. There is someone on here who makes replacements for this part from memory.

As you said there is no need to keep the two mufflers. One of them is hardly used any way.

B is the flexipipe
C is the restrictive piece, under the heat shield they appear crushed, but from what I understand its factory standard.
The answer is Helmholtz!

so I can replace the B to C part or will I have to do the whole secondaries A to C?

Can anyone recommend a good place to get it done on the Shore?

Really depends how far you want to go, and what sort of budget you have for it. I still dont think you can really beat the good ol pair of resonators and rear muffler (not stainless "muffler") for an NA system.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

I'm thinking lots of $$$ to replace the whole A to C piece. Maybe I could cut the pipe after the flexi and weld onto that. Anyone done this or replaced the whole section?

Yes it is and bloody good fun to get in! I upgraded to this from 4afe ''pee shooter' long before i put the 20v in, from C" i then went full boy spec 2.25 press bent with 1.3m of cobys ánd a 2bolt flange at the back to swap the shiny boymuff for a cooper style gagger come Wof day, the FE went better with the pee shooter at the back but the B/top hated it, and goes like stink with the big can. dont waste $ touching the front section, the japs got it pretty right, just grind the shield mounts off and wrap the extractors and they look percy
currently beating - AE101 Sedan, blacktop/6spd, tein coilovers, braided lines, cup holder, and every other bloody thing possible.
