my gearbox drops out of 5th. any cheap fixes?

Postby yobbosayo » Sat Feb 19, 2005 7:44 pm

when I put the car in 5th it jumps into neutral pretty much straight away.
is a replacement gearbox the only solution?

only cheap fix would be to put your knee against it to hold it in gera!
off to the gearbox fixerupperers otherwise

I would not hurt to check the gearbox and engine mounts, If the gearbox is moving around a bit it could cause this.

Yup, check your mounts, and check the linkages right. What kind of car?

You can get box's reconditioned for about $600 depending on wear. Thats what they quoted us but that was just for synco's, bearings and seals. If you've worn your teeth it could be quite costly.

I had this problem in my 1980 Charade.

First I just used my knee to jam it in 5th, then it got annoying so grabbed some number 8 wire, looped it aorund the dash mount and then looped the end so it just fit over the end - was tight enough to hold it in 5th, worked a treat!

I had the a similar problem after I got my mazda 323 box recon'd. With that box they could fix it without removing the box (just the end / gasket section).

heh, no. 8 wire eh? I was thinking about using a piece of elastic or a big rubber band but wire would be so much cooler! and yeah, I've been using the knee trick or just holding it but it gets a bit hairy when I want to turn the lights on or adjust the radio!!

It's a NZ ae82 liftback. Dr-X I don't think it's the mounts cos it got progressively worse when I was driving around the south island. Over about 1000k's it went from nothing to jumping out immediately. So it must be the other stuff. I should get a quote from a gearbox place i suppose

LOL, that little 3 cylinder sewing machine could move actually. 7k redline, would happily cruise at 130 - and was capable of more.

Great little car :D

oh yea and youd want to be careful using limbs to hold it in gear, in certain situations (cant remember why off the top of my head, and this ripped $&#$% if im going to try) it can ping out of gear, with the full load of the engine pushing that gearlever back, i've sprained my left arm many times on one of my old gboxes, and i know a couple of people that have broken thumbs and wrists.

needs to be pretty damn rooted though :?

well, the saga continues. I replaced the gearbox and that fixed it... for a while. but about 1000k later it started happening again. So i checked the front and rear engine mounts and sure enough, they were shagged. I've just replaced the back one but it hasn't made any difference to the problem. Maybe if I replace the front one it might, I'm not sure.

or maybe the replacement gearbox was shagged too, cos it was a second-hand one. but's funny how the problem just gets worse over time.

I did check the mounts when I did the gearbox and I noticed they weren't the best, but everything I had heard pointed to worn synchos, so I thought I would leave the mounts for the time being :?
