Bluetop 4AGE Gearbox queries

Postby MINTFX » Thu Jun 02, 2005 9:32 pm

Hey, I am looking at replacing the gearbox in my AE82 FXGT. The main reason as I want a smoother change and the no crunches if changing quickly. The current one that is in the car at the mo has jus started to crunch while shiftin up into third and can sometimes crunch going into second if I flick it in too quickly. After talkin to a couple of people theyve all said that the most likely thing is the syncromesh is worn out and they say that theyre not worth fixing.....and I should jus buy a whole new gearbox. I was just wondering if a later model Corolla or Levin gearbox will bolt straight on or will I try have to try and find a mint 16v bluetop one (which will be a mission). Any comments will be great!

they almost come from the factory like that!

the only real way to get a good shift is a rebuild as any 2nd hand box will be the same. the syncros arnt dear, and if you get a good deal on the labour itll be a better deal in the long run.

yes later model ones will fit

So you would recomend replacing the syncros then? My dad is a mechanic so labour will be free. Any rough estimates on a prices for the syncros and how much of a job it would be to replace them? Or would it just be easier and cheaper to buy a later model box with 100ks or less on it?

Yea did that a couple of months ago while we replaced the clutch. Just used some average Penzoil gearbox oil but I will replace it on monday with some better stuff while I do an oil change and ill see how it goes. Im still interested in either replacing the gearbox or replacing the syncromesh in the next 6mnths though. Thanks for the comments so far keep em coming!

new syncros fro 2nd and 3rd = $150ish

second hand box under 100ks $250ish

and who knows how long that will last.....
