As well as longer wheelbase, so it's 'easier' to drift.

Your point is valid though, there is 6 year's technology between them (going by release dates - '83 and '89) so they are really a little far apart.

That said... IRS, LSD, RWD... three elements almost essential to drift.. they do have that in common!

Realisticly when these cars were designed they were designed with different goals in mind. Skylines' HICAS and smooth motor is an example that they were inteded as a tourer (Oh, and the GT badge, lol!). The AE86 was definately inteded more as a 'taut' car.

Neither were specifically designed to hold massive smoking sideways drifts 8O :lol:

As for having an 86 over a skyline from the same era...well, yes, but you'd be comparing to an R30/R31 skyline, not an R32... :)

To get back nearer the topic: AE86s are definately cool, but they are a 'cult' car, and not everyones cup of tea. Pretty good looking for its era too, although they need simple colors (ie black/white) and garish bodykits murder their looks (NFSUG2 anyone? :? )

Fully agree with the bodykit/paint thing.

Ae86 dosn't have IRS though dude and its not really considered somthing you need to have for drifting, more the opposite.

Have seen an 86 with an IRS conversion though...

yes but a rust free one is rarer :D
besides a mint s/c mr2 ant far behind a ae-86 youll be lucky to get a mint aw11 s/c for under 5-6 grand thses days
that turbo one on trade me also sold for moonbeams

give us 10 more years and i recon the ae-86 will be just a boys hack and the aw will be the difinitive toyota sports car :D
after all they still make the mr2 :D
and the aw10 was what started there obsession with MR
in fact i think the aw was there first 4age powered car ??? back in 1983-4

I thought that the 4age was designed for RWD application? That is why when in front wheel drive application all the water pipes are long and unrequired! Also the externally mounted thermostat gives it away!
I believe that they came out in the Carina before the AE86 though.

I stand corrected. I thought IRS would be a godsend to drifting... keeping wheels flat despite compression etc... that said I suppose you want as much anti-squat as possible... :?

Sorry should have said its not normally considered an advantage for drifting. IRS is good.

The “A” block series is a versatile engine that has undergone many revisions.

The 1A-C started out as a 4-cylinder, SOHC, 1.5 liter carbureted engine which was introduced in the 1980 Tercel. It was upgraded in 1981 to the 3A-C. Changes to the cylinder head improved emissions control and performance. The 4A, introduced in the 1983 Corolla line, featured an increased displacement to 1.6 liters. It was available in several variations including the 4A-C, (SOHC, carbureted), the 4A-GE (DOHC 16 valve head, fuel injected), and the 4A-GZE (DOHC 16-valve head, supercharged, fuel injected.) In 1984 the 4A-ELU was introduced with improved helical ports with swirl control valves, programmed sequential injection and improved ignition system which helped the system in the ultra-lean, high efficiency lineup. The ‘A’ family of engines have been used primarily in the Corolla, AE82, AE86, AE92, AE101 & AE111, but can be found in the first generation MR2, AW11 as well as some lesser known Toyota models (Engine options may vary depending on the vehicles point of sale.) The 4A-F and 4A-FE engines have replaced the 4A-C in Corollas since 1988. In 1990 the A block deck height was lengthen, the crankcase slightly enlarged and a special oil pan extension was add to increase the displace of the A family to its largest, 1.8 liters. Its designation was the 7A.



ben the fact the tercel was a fwd car that basically means that the a series motor was in fact desined to be transverce :D

apprently the corolla was the first 4age powered car :S
later the same yeah came the aw11 the ae-86 and the carina after that

they released the 4age to the public mid 1983 :D

The ‘A’ family of engines have been used primarily in the Corolla, AE82, AE86, AE92, AE101 & AE111,

they listed all the models in the corrolla range

Lucky me.. Have TE71 and AE86 8)

AE86 is defenatly faster and drift better.. But I like the look of TE71.. very square looking.. and unique. I wanted to bring the TE71 back to life one day.......
