Worked 4K How many HP?

Postby Big pun » Fri Jun 10, 2005 3:53 pm

Ive just dropped this 4K into my KE25 and i was wondering how many HP i should expect??
Its been rebuilt with a lightend flywheel and balanced bottom end, Kelford cam, double valve springs, flat top pistons, shaved head, mild port and polish, lapped valves, honed bores etc..
twin 40mm Dellorto side draughts, redline manifold, Holley fuel regulator, ram tubes & carb socks.
the dizzy & alternator have been rebuilt, it has a new battery, leads & spark plugs.
Extractors & 2" exhaust will be going on soon...

has anyone here dynoed a 4k?
the dude i got the carbs off told me his 4k race starlet got 100hp at the wheels with these carbs, does that sound about right or is he pulling my leg?

also, are there any minor mods i can do to get a bit more power out of it?

Cheers

There is only one real way to tell how much power its making and that is to have it dynoed

Most of the hard tuned 4k's seem to make 100ish hp at the wheels, which isnt bad for an old pushrod lump...equates to something along the lines of 130hp at the flywheel :D

Isn't a bluetop 130hp factory? So, a massively worked 4K is the same as a standard bluetop powerwise?

You can get some decent go out of the K series engines, they're usually in KEs though which weigh nothing so they seem like they go as good as a 4AGE.

Completely different engines to compare though, and the 4K would be pretty lumpy compared to a factory engine made to pass emission standards and be nice to drive

a built 4K should pee all over a standard 4ag . the norm seems to be around the 120-130hp ATF, but there have been bigger numbers made from these wee pushrod gems, and 150 isn't impossible.

rant all you like that a 4ag can pull 200+, but that is 20 year old Yamaha tech, not 30+ Toyota technology.

1st off i tatally agree with what you have just said fangsport, good to see everyone here isn't 4age mad.

I doubt you will make over 100hp, i would say about 80atw. Unless the kelford cam is a very high duration/lift etc and those flat top pistons give you about 11.5:1 compression.
4k's seem to run out of puff about there, you need to work on how they flow aswell, not just a porting job but possibly upright the engine or loop over manifold.

Btw my 4k has similar mods and makes 58rwkw :)
Have a look at my profile for a list of mods

Speaking from experience I had a 5K in my KE30 with similar mods to yours and on the dyno put out the same power as a 4AGE.

The 5k was quite fast but could only use 96+ gas, used $&#$% heaps of gas needed constant tuning and ran out of puff just after 6 grand.

Now ive installed a 4AGE, although its roughly the same power as the 5K it is a SHITload faster due to the rev range, the 4age has power from low down all the way up to 7500, so basically the 4AGE can do everything the worked K series can, but with 91 fuel, in stock form with no stress on the motor, and give reasonable mileage.

4age wins hands down in my opinion, but dont sounds as cool or as tough as a worked K series.

Mr Genocide, the hp qouted could well have been racer talk, a bit like a fishermans tale.

I have similar mods and had mine made 56Kw (about 76Hp) and 207Nm at the wheels. Only mesured to 6500 rpm but should have been done till 8000.
Im gessing if you run the standard running gear it should be even more as its lighter components.?

Hope you have fun with it!,

HRT dont you mean the starlet weighs nothing not the corolla?

What are you implying cozmo? that the torque is to high?

IMO i would say thats about right as i stated above, my 4k with similar mods made 58kw (about 80hp) & 300Nm at the wheels and yes i do have a dyno sheet to prove that.

With that kind of torque, it probably peaks early and then drops off rapidly.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
