ST183 Headlight bulb replacement? (pop up lights)

Hey Guys

I know this is a pretty simple question, But whats an easy way of replacing the bulbs in my Celica?

I know that you have to have the lights up, but there seems to be some hidden screws or a lot of stuff to take off just to be able to pull the headlight out.

Any instructions would be greatly appreciated as Im replacing these tonight

AFAIK they come out the back...well the bulbs are removed teh backside of the light where the loom goes through wich means you leave the front cover intact...

1 - pop the lights up and turn the switch back to the 2nd to last postion (no lights on but lights still up)
2 - remove the black plastic cover over the light unit, from memory there's 2 screws on either side
3 - remove the chrome surround on the light housing. If you look straight at the light from the front, you should see 2 screws (one at either end) on the top and 2 on the bottom, remove these. Don't get them confused with the adjustment screws which are in the middle and have springs behind them
4 - the light housing will now be free to remove, pull it out and remove the plug on the back
5 - remove the rubber boot on the back of the unit, there should be a wire clip holding the bulb in, undo the clip and take bulb out
6 - put new bulb in, making sure that it's sitting flat and that you absolutely DO NOT TOUCH THE LENSE OF THE BULB WITH YOUR HANDS OR SKIN! Put the clip back on
7 - assembly is reverse of removal
8 - repeat steps 2-7 for the other side

Malcom: We had a look and the bulbs are part of the headlight?! Was your celica the same?

are you certain? if so then you have sealed beam headlights, which means you have to replace the whole unit! You can get semi-sealed units to replace them, which is what I have, where the bulb is separate from the unit. I actually have some that will fit from an MR2 here, just have to confirm that they're not sealed one too!

Just out of curiosity, are you replacing them because they've gone, or because you think they're gutless?

I didn't actually notice until my WOF guy told me to clean them. I had been racing round the Waitak's at night with these dirty as lights, not even giving it a second thought! I cleaned them and went for a drive that night and it was friggen amazing.

Thing is, because they're popups, you just don't think about it!

st18X headlights arnt sealed beams.... they are normel H4 headlights..... only semi-sealed beams, the H4's themselves are replaceable. just bitches to get at

doesn't mean that a previous owner couldn't have swapped for sealed beams, perhaps due to a crash damaging the old lights or some other crazy reason

dont BS me, lol, ive had to take those out quite a few times cos the bulb i bought decided it didnt want to do high beam, so i had 2 low beam, and 1 high beam.

2bx type lamps. avail in sealed, or semi sealed. semi sealed are a lot cheaper to replace bulbs in!

yeah, they're semi sealed units.
You can have em complete with bulbs for $20 (for both)
