angle you can have a driveshaft running at?

Postby Psycho_Dad » Sun Jun 26, 2005 5:40 pm

ok im sitting here staring at my project, noticing that the differential is substantially lower than the rear of the gearbox

what angle does the driveshaft have to be at if both the gearbox and diff are horisontal?

i hope this makes sense

cheers

yup there is a spec,
i have a digital angle for measuring this, but cannt remember what angle to aim for,
maybe call a d/shft shop and see what angles are recommended,
i dont helping you measure the angle,

another way is to measure the top of gearbox out put to top of diff input, and then from bottom of gearbox out put to bottom of diff input, the will be 2 different measurements, and there is a spec for the max it can be ax well. but i cant remember it. :?

A lot of homebuilt kit car/race car things that have the gearbox mounted next to the driver (ie where the passenger would be if it was a 2 seater), with a pretty short driveshaft going to the diff which is obviously in the center, and they have reasonably high angles on the shafts, so they normally replace the universal joints atleast once a season. I think that generally speaking the more angle you put on the shaft, the shorter the life of the universals, but too much and you will be running a huge risk of a universal failing and causing serious damage to the underside of the car, or even the top of the car, aswell as you if it causes you to roll! So yeah, definitely call a few driveshaft specialists

yeah i have called and they said i want less than 3 degrees... then i called the chevron guys and they said the same all fours said about universals wearing out, and the best thing to do is just mod the chasse till its low enough to be satisfactory... sounds CHEAP to me... bugger it

actually looks pretty easy to do, if i had the welding skills id be under their right now....

anyone else hear the money money money song in their heads? and how much should it cost to get a d/shaft setup? i got quoted $400 from 2 shops, if i supply both shafts
anyone know how much this should cost?

who wants to mount my engine/gearbox?

peace

i dont mind welding stuff up, cheap if its all prepped ready to go!!

This probably won't apply to you in this case, but worth keeping in mind, universal joints do need to work at some angle (ie not zero) otherwise the rollers in the uni joints dont move and wear rapidly, "brinneling" i think its called, and that causes a whole other set of problems....

As edwagon said, keep the uni's working a little. Out of line a bit is fine, really want to make sure the tailshaft and diff-snout are parallel, dont try to 'point' the tailshaft directly at the diff, this can cause problems.
You may also find cert'ers may ask you to install driveshaft loop if running one-piece shaft.
Awesome deals on d/shafts? DriveInn(New Lynn) (09)827-2826, ask for Aiden, he will be the best & prob cheapest you will ever deal with. All our drift/race cars run his shafts.Have used others & they dont even compare!

Hope this helps, good luck with project :D

Apparantly from what the suspension set up place down here that is very good the nose of the diff should be 4 degrees down at the front,
