Crunchy gear box

Postby method » Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:07 pm

Ok i think my car came with the factory crunchy gear box option.

Its an ae82 gt corolla with a redtop in it.

First to second seems ok although i dont give it shit through these gears, second to third can be quite bad and back into second isnt possible without without a crunch if your not doubble de-clutching.

Im just wondering if a syncro or gear does 'break' will it take the whole box or just that gear?

I will porbably change the gbox fluid and hope that helps a bit.

Im a bit hesitant on buying a second hand box seeing as it probably wont be in too much better shape than mine. I have read that second and third gear syncros can be bought for $150ish.

How hard would it be to get them in? A friend told me the gbox is a complete bitch to get together so i dont think ill try my self :p.

Any idea of the pricerange for work? Just to make sure i dont waste time getting quotes if it costs mega dollers .

Cheers.

i used to have this problem, have since replaced the gearbox as the cost of the syncro's, plus labour to open the box up was goin to be toooo expensive, so i found another box, and my clutch was going so i did that at the same time.

The obvious if you can get into 2nd without crunching it, the syncro is pretty much gone, the crunching is you slowly wearing away the teeth of the gear.

I would recommend a box transplant if you can find a decent condition one, cos believe me, its gonna be alot cheaper, especially if you need both 2nd and 3rd gear done. Do the clutch while the gearbox is out if you are thinking of gettin a new one.
I had vtax :(

Ok sweet as, i will probably do it all my self if its not too hard. I just got to find out if my mate has the right tools .

How much did it all set you back, did you just get a second hand box from the forums or a simmilar place or from a wreckers with some type of warantee on it?

The worst thing would be to fork a a coupple of hundred only to have the thing crunch again.

I had the following done all at once:

2nd hand S53 fwd gearbox from wreckers - $500
Clutch kit, machine flywheel, labour & oils, fix engine mounts - $450

so 950 total.

Went to the local toyota dealer who was going to charge me $750 bucks just in labour to put the syncros in the box.
