As far as I am aware all Toyota cambelts are recommended to be changed at 150,000km for New Zealand new vehicles and 100,000km for import vehicles.

If in doubt call your local Toyota service agent. They are really the only ones who can answer a question like this with accuracy.

last i heard, mine snapped at 77,000km's

thus the reason why it was changed.

this is what the chaps up at the local mechanics said anyway... them doing it to the car before i brought it.

what happens if its got a timing belt sticker but you dont know the reliability of the kms? then your kinda fkd. Do you reckon this is why heaps of imports come in with cambelts done at 60kms? because they were on about 80-90 but wound back and then done the cambelt so it doesn't snap at 65kms?

If you get a new car and aren't sure of the mileage then its probably worth doing it anyway, just like doing all the fluids and things when you get a new car.

Do them before 100,000 whatever car it is, some (not toyotas) are recommended to change every 60,000kms.

Had a Celica in the other day, 3S-GE which hadn't had a belt done for 135,000kms. Car still ran fine and everything, but inside the timing covers the belt was breaking up on the edges to the point where there was only about 3/4 of the original belt still on there and it looked like a sheep had been caught up in the timing gear with the amount of fluff and crap that the missing bits of belt had given off. That fluff along with a leaking water pump meant that there was a buildup on all the timing gears and idlers which was slowly wearing away at the teeth on the cambelt too. Wasn't too far from letting go completely.

If in doubt, change it.

If the car is a stock 20V and you snap the cam belt the valves will not bottom on the pistons.

A mate snaped a cam belt on his 20V. Was fine after a new belt.

Probably best just change it now, instead of worrying about $100 dollars. If your worrying about $100 you shouldnt own a car.

Or you can drive it till it snaps, which will end up costing you more because you need to add the price of a tow truck.

We used to change them on our stock at 90,000km.

Many of the service stickers showed the Japanese owners were changing them at around this mileage so we figured it was probably the recommended time.

Remember too, that not only mileage, but age is a factor in deterioration of rubber components. We once had a genuine 10,000km AE101 Levin that looked & drove like new but on inspection the cam belt was quite severely cracked through age.

BTW Blacktops will bend the valves if cambelt snaps, unlike most petrol toyota wich do not bend the valves if cambelt snaps.

YOU'VE obviously never changed a cambelt on an SW20 before :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

When I was doing cambelt on a blacktop, if I would turn the crankshaft by hand, while belt was off, it would turn only ~270 degrees back and forth, + there are no cut outs on pistons for intake (?) valves

probably you were lucky that the camshafts stopped where they stopped, otherwise you might had bend valves, damaged pistons/conrods...

wasnt me who had it snap on though, was the last owner, the mechanic chaps that did the cam belt told me (i did work exp there), seems odd though aye... low km's (well, sort of) and it snaps..

oh well shit happens, still going hard though.
