Tinted Lights

Postby FXGT » Thu Jul 14, 2005 11:24 pm

Hey!

I was wondering whats the best way to tint my FXGT tail lights? I've heard there is a spray, what's it called and where can i get it from? Is it the best way?

If i do buy that spray, is it ok to use for my windows, as long as i keep it within the legal window tinting requirements?

Thanks!

You can get that stuff at Repco, dont use it on windows. Gives a crappy result on tail lights too and you might find you get failed on warrents too (not to mention trouble from the cops if they know what the rules are)

Hmm, what do you by 'crappy result'... does the paint peel or somethin??

Does anyone else not recommend them? Anyone done it?

Thanks

With my dirty old chevette I just painted them with a couple of coats of matt black spray paint. 8)
Passes warrants after I stuck a coupla bits of reflective tape on the bumper.
So I still A: have lights visible from 100m away
and B: still have reflectors.

Head down to a car sprayers, (take your lights with you), ask if he will spray a few coats of glossy black over them, followed by a coat of gloss etc.

looks MINT im told :).

My flatmate aka Dangerous Driver used "nightshades" for a pleasing result. Just use many light coats vs one heavy coat, oh and make sure you heat the can up in warm water before use.

Last place i checked would charge you (well they did for a oldskool merc), to take the stockings off.

they even took their time.

same with the *eyelids* on the headlights.

very expensive warrent :). he couldnt refuse it either, or theyd need to remove his warrent :D!

- oh and cost for spraying the tailies? im not really sure, i just know a mate of mine did it hahaha. Id imagine its the most expensive option here, but in all honesty will look the very best.

just head down and ask for a quote? Just make sure they dont do to many coats :D

The spary stuff from super cheap is probably the best, but practice first as it can be hard to get an even coat... and worst comes to worst, come wof time, a bit of paint thinner should get it off again

the best option would be to get a spare set of tail lights, that way when it comes to wof time, all you have to do is swap the tail lights over, and swap them back once you have your wof.

i wouldnt even bother. If tinting your tail lights means you wont get a wof, then you run the risk of being denied insurance if you have an accident, due to your car not being up to WOF standard.

yeah sure you might actually get lucky and get to the car before the insurance assessor does, to change the tail lights. faaar too many times i've seen this being near on impossible, and insurance has been denied because of it.

sounds like an awful lot of hassle and wasted money for 5/8ths of f**k all reward if you ask me

I have tinted perspex covers over my rear lights.... Have no idea of their origin (other than Japan) but have passed VINZ and a local wof, light is not reduced measurably from a standard tail light...

I remember seeing your car on here before and i was thinking WTF, how does he get a Wof....

Anyways, Distrb made some good points on not doing. I guess you're right, but what if it was a fairly light tint?? That would get away with a Wof in some places, wouldn't it?

Thanks.

u remember on campbell live they had that boyracer thing? they showed a guy getting pulled up and fines for tinted tail lights. Although they were fullyy black out with a little part uncovered. You could always spend a bit more and get sum crystal lights, i think they make them for ure FX, theres one down the road with them.

They do, but it's WAYYY too pricey.

I don't watch Campbell Live... but surely if it wasn't too dark, and the main part of the 'break light' and 'reverse light' were masked when sprayed so that they are not tinted you wouldn't be hassled when going for a WOF? Would you? :?
