4age starting problem

My 16V 4age has always been reluctant to start, it has always started but it takes a bit longer and makes cold morning starting even longer again. I did a search and came across this:

Early toyota's do not have starter relays. That is the problem. Voltage drop through the wiring and IGN sw is the problem. It will need a starter relay fitted. Common prob. We prob do 2 toyota's a week with that prob at work.

Turn on all the elec accessories, lights heater and rear demister. Turn on ign and wait for about 5 sec's then start. If this stops it from starting then this is the problem.

According to this, only the 4age in the AW mr2 got a starter relay. What is the benefit of having this starter relay? The starter has its own power feed from the battery so if the contacts can be held closed from the ign feed, causing the starter to have power and try to start the car. then why would giving this feed more power help with starting?

I could've just sent matt a pm but if it's here to see hopefully others will benefit from it too.

i had this same problem and put in a starter relay and no more issues , obviously over time the wires oxidise etc and u are talkin about old wiring , so its good to set up a new starter relay and feed power directly to it

Ive also had the throwout bush worn out on my old levin. This made it crank slower and slower untill finally, after afew years it stopped. Replaced the bush and all was dandy again.
Another option also, is the starter brushes- the starter gets a little picky when they wear out. Ive had to change them on three cars in the last few weeks- just totally worn out.

A Starter relay will fix them when they won't wind over,

But if it winds over slow then a relay will not fix that.

If it's and early 4AGE it will either be the bush in the front known as the "drive end bush" or the brushes will be down.

Most likely guess from what you say is the bush will need replacing.

I have done many of them.
