sensors on exhaust? are they needed?

Postby phatman3801 » Fri Jul 22, 2005 9:42 pm

hey ive had the exhaust done on my blacktop not so long ago, and was under my car the other day and noticed that there are no sensors pluged into the new pipe at all now!! is that ok, or should they have been repluged into the new exhaust, and the shop has just cut corners??

Id say so, unless he got the headers done too... which no one does on a blacktop anyway ^_^.

so its all fine, youd start getting error codes if it wasnt getting anything from the 02 sensor.

headers have been done, they have been redesigned into a 4 to one, so its 2 1/4 from right at the start of the system, and there is no o2 sensor pluged in! is that def needed to be pluged in?

Go seach what open and closed loops are with ECU's

thats why they need them, and yes, blacktop ecus do this too.

"Closed loop mode means that the ECU will compare the measured air/fuel ratio to the target air/fuel ratio and automatically increase or decrease fuel delivery accordingly. In open loop mode, the ECU will still use the oxygen sensor to read air/fuel ratios, but will not adjust fuel delivery as in closed loop mode."

Closed loop = Check exhaust for A/F ratio, and will increase or decrease fueling to cope.

Open loop = predefined *map* of fueling (if you will).

If your car has an O2 sensor as standard, then it needs one. If you take it out, it won't be able to tell if your car is running too rich or too lean. Thats what they're there for, to make adjustmesnt to the A/F ratio.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Is the sensor around that area?
might be dangeling around or something...
if its not there, it cant be put there...

maybe you have a l33t aftermarket ecu running open loop the hole time?
