apply the throttle, engine stalls.... :-S

Postby skoty » Thu Jul 28, 2005 10:47 pm

Basically the motors another bluetop 4age. Was running perfectly until a few days ago. Initally engine was hesitant to accelerate, then it would splutter and sound as if the engine was firing on the exhaust stroke and doing this random sh#t (take not engine timing has NOT been adjusted) Now the engine will barely idle and thats the only thing it can do, as soon as the throttle is applied, engine stalls, the only way to rev the engine is to continuosly tap the throttle a million times. Basically the car is undriveable, very inconvinient. Any ideas?

It almost sounds like the throttle position sensor (tps) but that hasnt been touched. My bet is on fuel but I need some ideas...

check timing belt

Postby andyztouring » Thu Jul 28, 2005 11:10 pm

check the timing marks on the cam cogs are OK and timing belt is tight,if the belt is loose,it can jump or slip a tooth and run poorly.

My money is also on fuel. Either filter or pump. Why dont you get a flow test? Have you tried running it on engine start? Not safe, but should tell you if its a fuel or a timing issue.

We had this problem with a car at work. It turned out to be that someone had replaced the hollow bolt that goes into the fuel filter with a normal solid bolt. So not enough fuel. Did you do any work on the car recently?

Start the engine, and see if it will rev while you're spraying crc engine start into the intake manifold. If it does, then you car's not getting enough fuel.

And if it doesn't make sure your afm is plugged in, i had a similar problem that turned out to be i'd forgotten to plug the afm back in after some intake mod's

My money is on your cambelt.
Sometime when they get worn they will slip a couple of teeth due to the teeth breaking off the belt.
This affects your cam timing which can gives similar symptoms.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Check the hose from the throttle body to the air filter it may have a hole in it.

The car is MAP sensored, not AFM. So basically first two possible causes will be either a fuel restriction (f/filter) or the cambelt skipping a tooth or two baring in mind im unaware of when either were changed. The "engine check" light does not stay on when the engine is running therefore its unlikely one of the engine sensors has fukt out.

Replaced filter, no fix as yet however it is definatly fuel because when I sprayed fuel in the intake it ran perfectly. So I guess it comes down to either faulty/blocked injectors or...?

how bout try the fuel pump relay first? its pretty straight forward. or you could check for fault codes? a simple search on google brang up this:

http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/ and it will pretty much tell you your troubles ;) also u can bridge 2 terminals on your diagnosis plug to by pass your fuel pump relay which, if the relay is f*cked will turn the pump on and the car will run (if it is infact the relay thats gone, which is possible just as likely, if not more likely than the fuel pump)

also theres probly more than 1 fuel filter, just after the tank so mite pay to change that 1 to.

the injector issue, a guy tried to tell me thats whats wrong with my cressida, but it seems unlikely that all the injectors would stop working at the same time, its more likely that just 1 will stop and u will only have 3 cylinders firing.

u could try putting on a pulse light to see if your injectors are firing when u are cranking, but as i said before bring up the ecu fault codes and it will tell u whats wrong, saves money replacing things untill u find the problem
