brake click

Postby Xavier » Sun Jul 31, 2005 3:54 am

hi,

i notice my car brake click sometimes when i reverse and stop...
i was told by my mechanic that it is the spring on the brake caliper.
he did took the spring or metal piece and bent it and put it back.
the click sound did went away for a few days but it came back again.
is there anyway i can fixed it permanently? or it is just common???
Cheers...

The noise is the pad moving in the caliper bracket, It is a common noise on alot of cars when applying the brakes in reverse. The noise can be fixed by taking the clearance out somehow between the pad ends and caliper bracket, this Is what your mechanic has tried to achieve by bending the spring clip...its obviously bent back.
Ive had to tack the ends of pads with a Mig and grind it back until its a tight fit before on customers cars when the spring clips were missing to fix the problem....

Its nothing to be concerned about safety wise,... just annoying

Just my 2 cents

Next pad change...Go with either a set of "Bendix advance" or "Lucas" pads available from Repco or Brake n Trans, they are fairly good quality and seem to fit well and are a slightly Harder wearing compound.

Just make sure they are bed in correctly from the start to avoid them glazing up...Your mechanic will tell you how, other guys here may recommend other pad sets but I havnt had any problems with these brands so far.

Just make sure there aint any movement inside the bracket with the new pads, and make sure none of the spring clips are missing, Coppercote the pad backs and ends also...this helps with brake squeel.

Hope this helps some

We usually give the customer the option because of price, but otherwise would fit bendix advance pads as good quality, Coppercote is a high temp copperbased grease which is also used as an antisieze compound on exhaust bolts etc, available through repco etc

hope this helps
