ee80 corolla engine options

my g/f's 1988 corolla just started getting a bit smoky, its her first car and she's only had it a few months so she doesn't want to spend too much on it, neither does she want to offload it just yet.

i'm pretty sure its the rings because its doing it mainly up hills and when you give it a bit of gas, i'd be open to any other ideas however????

also after ideas on what to do about it, i've got the skills to rebuild the engine but there's a lot of other things i'd rather waste my time on than a 17 year old 2E.

she doesn't want to upgrade, just a cheap fix or replacement (not smoke stop) so we're probably looking for either a 2nd hand engine in good condition or somewhere that can fix it cheap.

any ideas out there??????

you could look into sticking a 3A in there, as usually you can pick them up for free

4e-fe would be nice and easy. No mounts to change AFAIK

1e/2e/3e or 4e/5e if you can be assed with wiring and running extra fuel lines to change it to efi

not that keen on swapping over from carby, just looking for something i can do on the weekend. problem with 3A is 'legally' you need a cert and the g/f's worried about stuff like that for her insurance.

there are plenty of 2E at pickapart, real cheap, just make sure it is complete, and not bung...

i head to pick a part fairly regularly and i know there's heaps of them, just that how do you know if they're bung??? its not like you can start them up or even turn them over easily to do a compression check. i don't really want to end up swapping one in only to find that i'm in the same boat as when i started.

well, look for gunk under oil cap , dip stick, inside water pipes, try turning it by hand, inside air box (for exess oil), how may kms done, etc... basically look for same things as you were buying it.
If you have some free time you can save lots of money, and if engine is bung, hey you can sell it for parts, or even strip it out, and sell alloy bits to metal scrap pple, then try another one... from memory they cost like $90 any way...
