Replacing CV boot

Postby soven » Tue Aug 09, 2005 8:09 pm

Went for a wof and I was told that both my front CV boot is split. There isn't any clunking or noises when I turn so I assume that my axles are still fine.

What would people recommend? Change both the axles or just change the cv boots. I got quoted 2 hours labour and $50 parts for both cv boots.

This is a ST202 celica. Also, I might be looking to diy this if it isnt too complicated(requiring special tools).

Wouldn't be too complicated to do, but probably a bitch if the CVs dont go back on properly. And the CV nuts will probably be incredibly tight :) 2 hours would be a bit over the top for 2 CV boots I reckon, probably take one and a bit just to allow for everything. Some garages will have a tool for stretching the CV boot over the CV so you dont need to take it off which saves a fair bit of time.

If you want to do it yourself (explaining one side here) then you need to take the CV nut off (the one that you can see through the middle of your wheel, probably a 30mm or so), remove wheel, disconnect ball joint or bottom arm (whatever is easier), pull CV out of hub, pull hub out of the way, get the CV off (probably do it with a hammer, otherwise take the half shaft out and get the CV off with a hammer in the vice), put the new boot on, bash the CV back on and do the clips up on the CV boot, put everything back together.

A mate of mine got all four CV boots done in 45 minutes by a professional. He pretty much dropped the suspension and ball joints and pulled it from the inner CV.

If you do this you have to repack the inner CVs which is a mish. You could use something sticky like molybdenem disulfide and/or EP 2 which is will hold onto the joint while you put it back in a lubricated well. The main thing is that the inner is completely packed as Mr Toyota did it or else you comprimise reliability.

This is also how I did my boot. On older cars like mine and my mates the CV nuts is freckin impossible to get off. It probably wont be as hard to get off on a newer car and is not this is the easier option.

Also note the two ball joints have split pins.

Just get new boots put on. A new cv joint can be expensive.
