Starting Issues

Postby VAPOR » Mon Aug 15, 2005 7:29 pm

Hey, im having trouble starting my car (95 Supra), the battery went flat this afternoon, got a jumper, started fine then drove around for a bit before going home and parking it.

Tried starting it again but all it will do is make constant clicking noises when the key is turned. The battery is fine as all the electrics work, AC radio etc.

Starter has given me no issues at all prior to this, although i haven't driven the car in nearly 2 weeks (cause of flat battery?)

I'd appreciate any kind of help you guys could give me.

Cheers,

Sounds like stuffed alternator. Wont be charging the battery so you'll probably find its near flat again (hence the clicking when trying to start it). Jump start it again and check what voltage you have at the battery with it running (rev it up a bit too, check voltage at over 2000rpm)

If voltage is around 12ish or less then your alternator needs replacing/overhauling. If its up closer to 14 then the alternator is fine.

But check that first

I'd say your battery is not fine and you need a new one.

You radio will draw 2 amps, your starter will draw 200 amps, so just cause your radio works doesn't mean the battery is good enough.

Turn on ther headlights and try to start the car if the headlights go really dull, It's a battery fault,

Or possibly an Alt fault by the sounds of it.

If the battery and alternator work out to be ok, it could also be a sticking solnoid. Give it a light tap with a hammer (for a sort term fix only).
