3TGTE rebuilding..

Postby RS13 » Tue Aug 16, 2005 9:15 pm

Hi!

We're about to embark on a 3T turbo reassembly, as it was left for 5 years, and was taken apart recently to check condition. By taken apart, I mean literally into pieces!

Now, I've reassembled a couple of 2TGEU's before, but normally I'd mark the timing/cams to get the timing as it was before.. but the owner of this motor has simply pulled it apart without marking anything!

The thing that bothers me, is that this motor is a serious piece of kit.. flowed head, big cams, forgies, o-ring'd, hybrid t3 turbo, link engine management.. and I've never rebuilt a serious race motor. is there anything I need to be careful of? My intention is just to do the old no.1 at TDC, with both valves fully closed, with modded cams, would there be an issue with this? I can't see any factory marks whatsoever anywhere.

And, the bearings were brand new in the motor, when it was rebuilt, and have only been run when the Link was getting tuned. I know this sounds cheap! But they look perfectly mint, barely any wear.. they'd be ok to just throw back in?

And injector suggestions.. this motor was previously tuned to run 18psi reliably, but the injectors are gunky as, and rusty.. what would make good replacements? 5M? 7M? 3S? 4A? 13Bt? Bear in mind, we need something that'd run ok with the link..

I would be looking on http://forums.toymods.org.au/ quite a few people over there have played with these motors. General talk for injectors seems to be RX7 13B 550cc injectors or 7M-GTE 440cc injectors.

I've heard of bearings being used again many a time, but not ones that have been sitting around for that long without being run.
May be alright if the had been sitting in oil, if not they will need to be replaced I would say

As a matter of fact, its' in an AE85 Trueno! Its a stripped out racecar, got W55, Corona front brakes, coilovers etc, TE71 locked rear end, Ford calipers on the rear, Full cage etc. Was purchased as a written off wreck, many years ago for $2300.. 8O The owner poured over $20k into it, ran it once or twice setting it up, then left it in the garage, where it has been for just over 6 years.. because he's a lazy bastard! We've decided after many attempts, to resurrect it, maybe take it to a drift day and have a bit of a slide!

Not too sure on the hp, taking into consideration all of the modifications, I reckon maybe 210-230 at the motor? Does that sound right? Or maybe more?

And mr pad, would you be interested in selling your AE85 by chance? Swap for a Cefiro?

Ive just rebuilt my 3tgte (2tg head this time round) and really there is no difference in rebuild a 2tgteu or a 3tgeu. I also have the factory toyota 2tgeu engine rebuild manual.

As to cams they will be a bit tricker, as they will need to be dialed in correctly as per their specifiactions.

Cheers
