MR2 Questions

Postby WetDog » Thu Aug 18, 2005 8:21 pm

Hey, just wondering about a few things with an SW20.

With the cambelts on these is it a very major job to switch them? no more difficult than in a front engined front wheel drive car?

Also how do you guys that own the turbo ones find them to be on gas? Are they reasonably economical provided they arent thrashed all over the place?

Oh yeah what sor t of stereo setups do you guys with mr2s have? Is there room for a sub anywhere?

Finally if i was looking to buy a turbo one of these is there anything particular to this model of car that i should be looking out for? common problems etc?

Any help would be appreciated,

cheers

54Litre tanc, and we manage around 540-560km's, Open road driving, trying to nana it. (however the odd, GET THE HELL OUTTA MY WAY) does happen.

Yep, room for 2 subs (8 or 10 inch) behind each seat, need custom enclosures though. Black razor is doing a custom setup in his mr2, so id imagine he has plans or knows of plans for subs in an SW20.

We have Clarion 946Mp headunit, Boston accoustic's Front components, and stock rear speakers. Fader on clarion is set to full front. Plans include sub behind passengers seat, amp to power fronts + sub. Dosnt sound half bad as it is, but we NEED bass :)

Gen 3+ would be your best bet, bigger turbo, bigish revamp on the gen 2, easiest way to spot these ones is the round tail lights as apposed to the square. Problems to look out for is if they are had their balls ripped off.

Easy way to check if they have "swapped" the round tail lights onto a gen 2, turn the headlights on, have a look @ the tail lights. If the 2 *edge* ones are on, then its factory that way, If all 4 are on (dim), then they are swapped.

Cause you cant do that when you swap them
Easiest way to tell the difference is to actually pop the engine cover and look at the motor...early MR2's have TWIN ENTRY CERAMICS POWER on the plenum, the Gen 3's dont. Also the early ones have an AFM, Gen 3+ doesnt.
The front is subtly different too.

thats if they plug em in, i dont know many people that will re-wire them when they could just plug em in to work another way.

Later model ones (gen 4, 5) have no indicator on the bumper itself, but has been moved to the guard (just behind the wheel).

when did they start making gen 3's? 1993?
