Starter Motor Qs...

Postby Shady_Dan » Sat Aug 20, 2005 5:37 pm

Hey guys, has been a while since ive talked on these forums, thought it must be time to rear my ugly head again.

Have just had my starter motor shit itself in my AE92 Levin (Red top 4A-GE, non TVIS).

Main thing i want to know is what is the easiest way to get the damn thing out....looks like i have to take the heat shield off the extractors to get at it..(looks like a nightmare job...).

Thanks for looking and if anyone can give me some advice before tomorrow (sunday 21st august) will be much appreciated.

When I did mine several years ago I didnt have to take the heat shield off at all. I simply disconnected battery, two bolts holding starter, possibly the slave cylinder (I think it got in the way of removing the starter). pulled it out the rh side, undid the + cable and done!

Cheers for that, will look into it tomorrow.

My next dilemma is in the fact that i may have the wrong model starter motor (got one from the wreckers today, and not sure if its the right type, apprently theres five different types of starter motor for the same bloody model engine!)...but now that i have an idea on how to get it out hopefully it wont cause too many dramas...

Once again cheers :)

sweet as. assuming its from the same bellhousing, it should be fine. once you have the other out, easy enough to give it a quick measure up to make sure the throwout is the same and same amount of pinions on gear.
I cant say for sure, but surely if there are 5 different starters for the same engine then they will all be compatable? guess you will see tomorrow. goodluck :)

They are almost all interchangeable,

EXCEPT.... the one you have.

The smallport redtop non TVIS engine has a smaller planetry gear reduction starter and it is the only one that fits under the manifold on those ones.

Matt

If you want I can do one exchange for a fee,
as I have one here but do not want to sell it outright.

All fixed....

Got a startermotor from jonsonville in the end (its good to have people in the know at repco...love the cost + small % discount).

Part numbers matched up yet the actual body of the motor was STILL too big compared to the original...

So i thought "$&#$% it im gonna make this fit if its supposedly the right part" and got to putting it in....

After an hour of disconnecting as much electrical items as possible and removing the radiator completely, i managed to get it in....what a mission tho...never ever hope i have to do that again :P
