3S-FE ST206 Curren

the mrs has a 1996 st206 curren with a 3s-f2 2L motor in it

its got 17"s on it, but it looks mega rude jacked up to the hills

a lot of calalogues etc dont list curren parts, so what is the same as in other toyotas?

she wants a set of springs to fit and maybe some other fun bits

AFAIK the Curren is mechanically identical to the equivalent Celica. Basically, as the code suggests, it is a Celica. Certainly the suspension is identical. The equivalent Carina ED and Corona Exiv (I think I have those names right), the four-door Celica, should also be mechanically identical.

Note that I say 'equivalent', as there are quite a few variants (engines, four-wheel steering, super-strut, AWD etc.). Without checking, I think the ST-206 is the same as ST-202 for the other body variants (but this still covers different engines).

If anyone can help me with my car, would be great! Is a real bugga finding info on it as it is never listed as a Curren, Why they didnt just call it a Celica i dont know! II IS A CELICA! everyone always thinks thats what my car is anyway!!

Hey dude, having the same problem with mine- either no one knows what it is, or when they talk, show they don't know what they're talking about- I've lost count of the number of times somone looked at my car and said it was a variant of the levin/trueno- Grrr!

When I first saw the car in the Automobile Year annual, they basically said that it was made to compete against the Nissan Silvia in terms of appearance, since it was outselling both the Honda Prelude and the Celica combined... they also said that the running gear is the same, as is the switch gear- too much to list in terms of similarities, so the only real difference is the body work- oh, and the fact that there's no GT-4 version

Interesting to note though that the US celica has a boot, not a hatch- so designing the Curren wouldn't have been much trouble for them... besides, the Curren is better looking anyway!

You should not have any problems getting springs- as Perky says, codes are identical, so going for Celica springs will see you right. Have you asked Mr Revhead?

get your full chassie code, and give it to revhead, and see what he can offer you in the likes of lowering springs (santa will be able to help you obtain that information).

Actually in the US they got all 3 types of 6th gen Celica:
-Liftback
-Convertible
-Coupe (has boot)

All 3 had the same 2.2L (Camry derived) engine as the NZ domestic market Celica (GS). Luckily we also get the 3SFE/GE powered versions (SSI/SSII/SSIII) through imports.

They never got the Curren (since it's really the celica coupe for the Japanese Domestic Market) - but Curren parts are quite sought after by US Celica Coupe owners - they especially love the facelift rear lights

Yeah, there's a bunch of different variants. As far as I can tell from pictures, the US Celica Coupe is a Curren with the Celica front lights and different rear lights (which as Nobody notes are apparently interchangeable). The convertible, despite the code (ST-202C) also appears to be based on Curren metal except for the front. Then there are the four-door versions (same codes as Celica) ...

The US, Australia and NZ had the 2.2 litre 5S-FE engine. Europe had the same 2 litre engines as Japan, including the 3S-GTE in the GT4 (ST-205), which was also available in NZ. Later 3S-GEs have variable valve timing. Japan also had a Curren with a 1.8 litre 4S-FE engine (ST-208), which of course is now available here too. There are also JDM versions with four-wheel steering (ST-203 Celica and ST-207 Curren) or superstrut suspension.

My Curren even says Celica on it! -- on the little labels on the seat belts.

Incidently, according to a Japanese web-site the name 'Curren' is derived from the English word 'current', which they interpret as meaning stylish and trendy "like 'vogue'". Furthermore, according to some graphics on one example I saw, the Exiv on the Corona Exiv (four-door Celica) stands for 'Exciting Version'!!

Just looking at the chassis codes, there seems to be one missing. You might expect there to be an ST-204 Celica which might (like the ST-208) have the 1.8 litre 4S-FE engine. This does not seem to exist.

However, the Carina ED/Corona Exiv, which shares the same codes as the Celica, did come with the 1.8 as ST-200. Interestingly, from 1994-96 this car was also made with the ST-205 four-wheel-drive chassis but without the GT-Four's turbocharger.
