series gearbox fitment.

Postby mjrstar » Sat Sep 03, 2005 12:34 pm

My friend has a pile of w series gearboxes and is looking to find a suitable engine to fit in front of it. Will a 3sge fwd engine fit and if so what sort of mods are required as far as flywheel and starter fitment. any help would be great thanks.

if you have an ST140 Corona engine set up to get the parts from its pretty easy.

You need a S pattern bell housing, the rest is fairly straight fowards

From my understanding W series is all top feed gearboxes (aka sit in the tunnel with the shifter running into the top of them). so if the car was fwd would't it simply not work as you'd have to run linkage arms to the gearbox to change gears.

Why'd u want to put a 3sge engine infront of a W gearbox anyway, tis a wee bit of a waste.

Oh but does your friend have any other related manual Gbox parts for the W series gboxes?

(P.S i'm a wee bit drunk, so discount any information thats wrong, cause you know. the beer and all that. (god town sucked tonight))

I have recently put a gen3 3sge and w57 into my rwd Carina racecar. It replaced a 4age T50 factory setup.
Well worth it.

Yes - 3sge from front wheel drive will fit with suitable engine mounts and bellhousing.
Starter - you will need minor mods to bellhousing and organise spacer and modified sandwich plate from fraser cars.
Exhaust manifold - get one made, mine was approx $800 (fairly fancy one)
Clutch release arm and bearing - mods needed to bellhousing or pivot and release bearing spacer mods
Firewall.... cut it like I did for distributor and water outlet or.... relocate distributor and mod water outlet.
Intake - throttle body wants to poke through the seam near the top of the firewall so you will need to mod intake or make new one.
I used gen3 3sge factory loom and computer.
Also - lots and lots of little things.

Call me to discuss the hundreds of things I haven't mentioned

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
