FWD gearbox onto 3SGTE

Postby DFECTED » Sun Sep 04, 2005 12:00 pm

Im pulling the engine out of a ST165, bolting it to a FWD box and putting it into my ST162.

The problem is that the starter motor from the ST162 enters the gearbox from under the exhaust manifold.

The ST165 starter motor enters from the gearbox side, the oil feed box will stop the starter motor from going into the FWD box.

Is there a FWD box that will fit that has the starter motor on the gearbox side or should I use the ST165 box, remove the transfer case and weld the center diff?

you can either use an mr2 turbo box with a bit of playing around with driveshafts, mounts, and shifter linkages, or get a box from an st170 corona, and I believe st182/3 celicas have the starter on the other side

Im actually undertaking the same project into my ST162 at the moment. I plan on using a S54 box (with LSD) from a ST202 Celica. I know that at least one FWD 3SGTE is using one (Jools with the FWD ST182 turbo). Only problem i could think of is if the starter is different on the gen 1 than the gen 2. Other than that i see it as a straight forward swap (unless you are using a AT160 as in your profile??)

Also check out www.4gcelica.net for help on the 4th gen Celica.

apparently the v6 camry box will suit, cheap and easy to get, some are lsd as well, and means you can use the bigger clutch,
the corona box has a small input shaft and getting a decent clutch is a mission

a VZV21/VZV31 Camry manual box would be CHEAPISH and they are an E series box ala 3SGTE, could be wrong but i think the bellhouising area from the ST165 box will bolt straight onto a VZV21/31 box to give you the right pattern to fit the motor.

Thanks for all the info, whats wrong with using the 4wd box, with the center diff welded? That way I dont have to dish out for a new box, trying to keep costs down at the mo.

Nope, still got that one as well, most of the good parts on that will be getting swapped over though.

You'll blow up the 4WD box in no time if you weld it up. Uuse a st170 or later gearbox they all mount the starter on the gearbox.
