Strange tachometer behaviour

Was driving along at a steady pace, and all of the sudden, the needle on the tacho jumped up and back down. No difference in the engine though.
At one point, it jumped all the way to 9000rpm and back down to 0, then back to about 2300rpm.

Anyone got any ideas as to what the hell that is??? :?

Yes, cause its easy for a stock 3S to zip round to 9000rpm and beyond :P

Ok, so anyone got some HELPFUL information? :P

Same type of thing happened in my old Integra, every time youd rev it past say 5k rpm the needle on the tach would go ballistic.

Took it to the auto sparky and they found there were some pins loose in the distributor :? Im not sure what 3S's run with regards to ignition but could be something like that

Is this a factory tacho?

Make sure all your connections to the negative of the coil are tight

Lol, had the same thing happen on my EP82. Check the wiring on the back of te tacho for breaks & also check the underside of the diagnostics connector especially the IG- wire. My car had the wire broken on the back of the IG- terminal on the diagnostics connector, fixed this & then the tacho was sweet. If you are having any igntion miss as the same time as it's happening then the problem is ignition, if the tacho is playing up then the problem is wring with the tacho & generally it's a broken wire for a factory toyota tacho.

Cheers guys, have been fiddling under the dash a bit (whole ignition barrel thing) so could be a bit loose.

Will check it out :)

I've got a pic of mine doing 11,000rpm :lol:

Mine was due to a loose positive terminal, plus theres another wire coming off that terminal that had snapped. CHeck those are good.

bad earth / bad connections somewhere.

If anything else happens in the dash area, its a bad earth in the dash area (duh)

If its ONLY the tach doing it, its going to be a bad connection to the dizzy (or whatever the sw20 gets its signal from).

Well, made sure all the connecters in the back of the dash were nice and snug. I think I felt one go in a bit more, can't tell very well as it was very awkward to get to.

Could have kept going, but things start to get a little intense at that speed... Decided it would be wise to back off.
