What would toyspeed members do

Ok, here's the situation.

You have $10,000 to spend on your next car, you have the following options -

For example, we'll use a Mazda RX7 FD

* Buy the one already in NZ, with 17" wheels, alarm, done 100,000kms

* Import one from Japan, it may take a month, but you can get one done half the amount of kms, and still have all the little extras. For the exact same price.


So you can buy the one in NZ and have it in 2 days, but it's done 100,000km's and average condition, or you can wait a month and a bit and get one done half the km's and good condition, plus it will usually come with bits on it, knowing Jap imports.

What would you choose?

Get one imported unless the nz one has had a rebuild. Dont they only last 100thou?? :?:

I'll be different and go NZ new, because you'll get a chance to see the car and check its condition before you hand over your money rather than buying sight unseen (not a good idea, as bitter experience tells me :cry: ). And anyway, a modern car should only just be run in at 100,000km... the ol' Sentra has just clicked over 274,000 HARD kilometres and is still going strong!

My dad will be importing them if my friend decides to go import too, and we get them from good places that give good detailed photos of anything wrong.

yer some of the prices over there...
mates dad used to own engine spares on the shore, went over to japan heaps to bring back cars or parts...
two '94 legacy RS both with 70k on the clock, good conditiion. NZ$1000 for both. sadly he couldnt bring back the full car as they are too old but hes picked up heaps of cheap parts by importing

You would have thought the answer was obvious!!

I'd say import, as you don't REALLY know what you're getting when you buy it NZ any way.

I'm looking at importing an s15. pm me the details of where you're getting it from too, I'd be keen to know (I have a mate that is going to Japan to live, so he may even be able to check em out for you!!)

Thanks for the offer, but dad's an importer and has agents over there to check cars out, etc.

I'd go with the NZ one. Just because at least you can see it face to face and know if anythings wrong with it. How do you know that the one you might import from japan is not an outright lemon and you send more on getting it fixed or complied than you ever would have on the example already here. :D

You raise a good point. But I have a good source. Dad's imported lemons before, so he doesn't import from certain auctions/agents. The ones he uses now give detailled descriptions and any pics of things wrong, etc, and I can get them checked out by his agents over there.

Sweet, but now how much extra is it going to cost regarding gettting it complied? Is it able to be complied ( year/model etc )? I've imported a couple of cars but the owners have had to spend a little more than they thought getting them certified for the 'extra' goodies like coilovers etc.
