Haha, well I'm a dick...

Got the tie rod end seperated from the steering arm knuckle tonight, undid the nut a few turns, few sharp smacks to the side of the steering arm knuckle, and it popped free...

Now, the nut is still most of the way on the end of the shaft, but when I try to undo it it just turns the whole shaft...so although its free, I now can't get the nut off...

What have I $&#$% up now...

hey i think there will be a alan key you can put in the center on the shaft and hold it while turning the nut with a spanner

Its just rotating in the bearing cup, nothing to worry about. Tap the whole lot back into the hole, remove the nut and tap it out again.

Tried that, it just won't $&#$% stay still...

I've got the nut half off, but it just won't come anymore...

You can also use your jack under it and get a heap more upward pressure on it. Keep lifting until all the supension movement is taken up and you start to lift the car. Should be enough to jam it in the taper again.

Time to amputate it

So little faith in the "bash the crap out of the side of it" method. One day young grasshopper, you will learn.

if you do amputate it, doing the following will save you from needing a wheel alignment:

get a paint pen and a black marker and accurately mark the locknut or tie-rod end. loosen the locknut 1/2 a turn, and remove tie-rod end. if the replacement is exactly the same, your wheel alignment will be the same as before you removed it.

could be worth looking at replacing it anyway, being loose suggests its halfway through its life and if you ever need to take it off again it will be even harder (assuming it tightens up ok again anyway)
pretty cheap part new.
