Cambelt Tension and wanting general help.

Postby Torz » Fri Sep 16, 2005 7:34 pm

Okay team, my cambelt is bung at the moment and I'm going to replace it (goodbye weekend).

But before I do this, I need to gather some information. My cambelt isn't broken, its just disgracefully loose (actually just loose). This obviously means that the tensioner isnt doing its job.

Now what I need to know is that can tensioners be reused (as in you can retighten it) or do I need to purchase a new one?

I'm looking at purchasing the following parts,

-----------------------
1 x new belt
1 x new water pump
1 x possibly new tensioner
-----------------------

Am I missing anything?

Any help would be appreciated,

Torz

You could reuse it, depending on if its noisy when you get it out or not. You'll need a cambelt, possibly tensioner, idler if its got one (and if its worn out) and the front seals if they've been leaking. Should have posted up earlier and I could have given you a hand if you wanted

What kind of tensioner is it? If it is hydrolic, get a new one. Its not worth the risk. Like you said, the tensioner isnt working for some reason so replace it. Thats what i would do.

Definately. The auto tensioner wasn't replaced by the previous owner when they did the cambelt in my GT4 and the belt let go while I was driving it. The job got done again... Properly! But thank god it wasn't an interference engine :D Few dollars worth of forged going up and down that I would've spat tacks had it been punched by the valves.

Do it once and do it right... pretty simple.

Replace it. Also replace the tensioner roller as well.

Cambelt Tension and wanting general help.

Postby jondee86 » Sun Sep 18, 2005 12:30 pm

If it is a mechanical tensioner (like 16 valve type) they should be checked and re-tensioned every so often... every 20,000 km should do it. There is even a bung provided in the cam belt cover to allow you to do this. Same as for external belts, check and re-tension every now and then. Gives you a chance to check the condition of the belt as well.

Cheers....

for the price of them, you should replace all idlers and tensioners, and maybe even the water pump.

I agree, although many customers refuse to spend the extra money, even against a mechanics advice - they think they're being ripped off!

As long as you compress the hydraulic tensioner slowly and make sure it feels ok, then there isn't usually a problem with re using them, you can tell easily if its stuffed.

having said that, I always use new idlers and replace the tensioners on a case by case basis. If they're not a crazy price (they often are) then just replace everything while you're there

Mine would be a Gen 2 3SGE, being a '90 MR2, correct?

Mine is hydraulic...

You guys are legends. Unfortunately I'm pretty damn busy atm so I couldnt do it this weekend (also my helper is busy). It might have to wait another while. In the meaintime I'll contact Mr Revhead and get some parts organised :)

HRT: You can still help me when the time comes :~)

Edit: btw, has anyone ever done a cambelt change in a MR2? From looking at my engine bay, the job looks like nightmare (HEAPS of parts will have to come off).

Fortunately theres heaps of step by step tutorials with pictures in Japanese on the net :) (I can read Japanese).

Yep, the MR2 is still healthy and running :) I see you've started a import business, hope thats going well. I'm looking at working in Japan in 2007 and planning to bring a Toyota Hybrid back to sell.

I'm assuming you're going to be driving a Gen V MR2 soon now that you're importing cars ;)
