Turbo charging a 3sge?

Hey ive recently brought an sw20 mr2 and since Nelsons got a crap selection of cars for sale at the moment i ended up bying a non turbo mr2 instead of the gt one i was looking for. So i was wondering whether it would be easy to turbo my 3s ge or just drop a 3s gte in? any help would be appreciated.

most people just drop in a 3SGTE, i havnt heard of many people turboing a 3SGE.

If you're looking for addictive rocket boost, dropping something along the line of Gen-III 3SGTE sounds more appropriate than doing up a 3SGE (I mean, dropping 3SGTE will probably end up being cheaper).

On the other hand 3SGEs arnt bad if you want to do it up for the *traditional* N/A motorsport approach.

4agte wouldn't have the torque unless you gave it a big $$ build or lightened the car to buggery

a 3sgte swap would be the easiest approach, if you got a loom and ecu from a GT then most of it would be a bolt + plug in swap. However if you want to change the gearbox to the turbo one also, there is much more f*cking around to be done

in all honesty, its probbaly easier to sell your car, and buy a GT.

although it has to be said that NA mr2's certainly do have their place in the world of fun cars. I've seen a couple of NA sw20's do high 14's with just intake and exhaust, which is pretty decent, and there's a certain aspect to NA's that makes them more fun to thrash around in, but if you want all out power, then forget about the NA (unless you have big $$ to spare) and either sell for a turbo sw20 or try pick up a wrecked sw20 turbo cheaply for the conversion

This man speaks the truth. A close friend of mine had a GLimited SW20 for ages, and it was awesome. Was bloody fast for NA, and sounded mean.

And yer, don't bother converting your MR2 ... by the time you swap the engine and gearbox and get everything upgraded, it would have been far cheaper to sell up and purchase a GT or GT-S.

Yep, thats spot on.

Im going the NA route, and for the money its going to cost me I could have had a pretty kick ass turbo motor.
So why am I doing it? I dont know.

If you want big power, then a turbo motor is the most cost effective route.

However for me, in the long term a turbo motor doesnt suit my needs. I dont want a weekend car, I want a car that I can afford to drive and enjoy every day. Except for times like now, when its broken, and I have to walk to work.

Ask All Fours how much his 3sgte and gearbox etc cost him.

It can be cost effective if you can do all of the work yourself, and you can find a crashed donor car. If you're prepared to sell off the other car bits, you can do it for very cheap indeed.

And yes, NAs can be a heap of fun.

Youre not going to win any motorway pissing contests, but if you can keep them on the boil they are an absolute blast through the twisty bits.

Do you notice a bit more speed wnen you do the exhaust? it must make a bit of difference getting rid of the huge muffler and cat converter?

What do you exactly mean by "do" the exhaust? If you have a massive system on your car right now (i.e. > 2.5") then obviously you will gain more from something smaller. Getting rid of the cat converter will definitely be positive, just remember to not throw it away and sell it to the local junk yard (platinum factor).

I have a really bad feeling that the government will enforce cat converters by law in the near future... hope it never happens.
