Disassembling C52/6

Postby Distrb » Wed Sep 28, 2005 11:14 pm

Working towards changing the diff in one. And also coz im interested in how they fit together

Have a spare one that i dont care too much about (it has 1'st and reverse only) im attempting to pull it apart.

Have undone every bolt round the bellhousing and have managed to seperate the two bits roughly by an inch or two, but theres something, around the selector shafts/input shaft area thats still hanging on.

Its obviously not rocket science, but there must be something i've missed or a method to disassemble one of these properly

So what did you need to do to get them apart? was it straightforward?

you need a gear puller/ prybar to remove 5th gear cogs (sometimes even a gas torch to heat the cog up a little) and once thats off it disassembles in layers and you're away laughing..

Just remember what you pulled off where. 8O

My advice is practice on a f**ked spare box before you go doing it on one thats worth something to you.

I got two gearboxes. Just want to fit a different bellhousing to relocate the starter.
Can I change the bellhousing? or do I need to tear the whole thing down to do that.
Would I need special tools to do it? as I wont be changing any bearings or anything

you can work down from the top, or if ya just doing the diff and have patients separate the lower section and fiddle with revers setup

It's quicker just to tear the whole thing down, I've done so many at work now I've got it down to an art form

you too huh??
Yes it's easy if you use a flat legged puller for the removal of 5th gear. Trust me, you need it to be flat

I'm with Acesniper on this one, seperate the bell housing and undo the reverse gear arm thingy. Easy enough to put back together afterwards once you have seen it apart.

Yea took lots of swearing and skinned knuckles to get the 5th gears off.

Once I got the casing apart I just had to undo the two bolts holding the reverse gear braket thingie and everything lifted out.

Just gotta reshim the diff now to adjust the preload.
Anyone done that before?

i checked the shims, they are behind the diff bearing outer cone, you'll need to punch out the outer bearing shell and shim sits behind that. measured up as 2.25mm on the one i tried,
