to box or not to box

Postby gordon77 » Sat Oct 01, 2005 3:37 pm

hey ppl i have two 6x9s in my parcel tray. it looks like crap and the origional holes (previous owner) are too close together. hence me making a new parcel tray.
i am going to mount the 6x9s higher and pointing more to the front with the help of spacers. now my question is, is it worth fabricating a sealed box underneath them. will this make the mid range sound better/louder? or is it just a waste to material and time.
they are *cough* fusion *cough* 3 way, 150watts @ 4ohms. they have 150watts up each of thier asses at the moment 8)
thanks ppl :D

I would try making the parcel tray to seal the boot as much as possible and use that as a box.

6x9's appreciate big boxes, and you cant get much bigger than your boot.

personally ive found small boxes on 6x9s reduce the little bass they have.

just my opinion, im sure others have theirs too :!:

yeah well i got a 12" sub to take care of the signal below 100Hz so yeah dont really want bass from the 6x9's, just to see if i can get them to go louder by boxing them.

fxgt - i got the speakers because there was already holes in the existing parcel tray and i couldnt be bothered making pods for my door trim. the fusion powerplant stuff sounds good enough for an entry level sound system.

well if youve got a sub then an average sized box would be best. give it a bit of clearance around the magnets etc, not too small.

Make sure its completely sealed though, it will give a more crisp sound, not necessarily louder though.

You shouldnt just 'make a box', the size of the box will affect the sound in many different ways. If you make the box too large, you'll get a boomy, laggy sound, and if you make it too small you'll get a loud peak at one note but almost no bass response at all. Not to mention, if the speaker has a high EBP it'll sound arse in a sealed box, whereas if it has a low EBP it'll sound arse in anything else but.

And the only way you can tell which size to build is to look up the T/S specs for the speakers, which if they're a 'brandname' product = good luck.

If you're not exactly sure what size box to use, you're far better off leaving them in infinite baffle mounting :) Or just get rid of them altogether ;)

so if i do make a box for them (the right dimentions) how will it affect the sound? will it make it better or worse? andd ahhh .. wats EBP? :?

blackie - if i loose my sub then ill have a big $&#$% hole from 100Hz to 500Hz where the fronts kick in

If they work better in a smaller volume than infinite baffle, and if they are designed to work in sealed boxes, then it will make it better. If they're not, it'll make them worse.

Efficiency Bandwidth Potential. Divide your speakers resonant frequency by its electrical Q factor (T/S specs : Fs divided by Qes). If the end result is less than 50, the speaker is suited to a sealed box. If its greater than 100, its designed for a ported box. If between 50 and 100, it'll suit both. That rule works with subs as well.

I take it you mean your 6"x9"s run from 100-500Hz and then your fronts kick in. If so, what it gods name... 8O Why have you got your fronts highpassed so high?

no no the 6x9s from around 100 (no actuall freq setting on pot) right up... the fronts have a full range signal going to them powered by the headunit but because being cheap 4" speakers they dont do much untill about 400-500Hz. thats what my ear tells me anyways. i just have them going at the moment coz im relocating my amp and there is no bass, even the low mids on a guitar disssapear :?

just use the boot space as your box. if you're serious about bass then get a few subs
