Blacktop trumpet/intake question(s) (UPDATED)

Postby Bling » Thu Sep 22, 2005 5:42 pm

Search done, and found lots of info regarding that 'H' word :P however I still have some queries.....

Took the car for a spin before without the intake plenum..(only a quick spin, and no dusty roads...) ... and I REAAALY like the sound the car made!!! So i want it permanently setup...

What problems will arise from taking off the intake plenum and just running the 4 stock trumpets with foam filters on each (or similar filters). Will there be any AF ratio problems due to the sensor in the intake line not being used?

OR

Will the engine run sweet as? I THINK from what I read that it won't perform as well as factory, but it just sounds soooooo nice :D

I've seen the aftermarket trumpets available to bolt on to the backtop/silvertops...... however, if the factory plastic ones will work fine with filters don't see a point in changing them.

Can anyone WITH KNOWLEDGE or EXPERIENCE on such matters please advise me as to whether or not to go down this path, and any pitfalls I'll run into.

Cheers

1st one i can think of is the power loss from all the hot air youll be sucking in.

Trumpets really narrow down your power increase to a limited rev range.
They're not really ideal for a street car. In a race car, sure, because they'll be at a length to give bigger power figures at higher RPM, which is where'd you'd spend most of your time. On the road, you're going throughout the rev range all the time.

How long until RedMist spots this I wonder? :)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Not long

If your after sound..... then go for it. I can't see a reason why it should cause engine damage, so long as you make sure the socks are up to the filtration. I only run K&N with prefilters, however you'll never go through the shit I do in a decade what I do in an hour. You might also have issue with mating the socks to the standard trumpets as they aren't round.

But hats off to you for admitting the true reason you wish to remove the airbox.

You only loose one Helmholtz resonance, although its an important one, it shouldnt put the brakes on the performance of your blacktop... too much.
The answer is Helmholtz!

That sensor in your intake plumbing will probably be your intake air temp and it would be a good idea too use it some how

Ok i own a silver top air flow metred 20v 4AGE my friend owns a BZG we took the intake off the back and left them open.

Then I brought the blacktop induction box and mounted it to my silvertop.

Cause there bigger and they don't quite fit but with a drill they do!!!8O

next comes the drag race his black top before we did this used to eat my levin we dragged and I won so he wanted his blacktop plenum box back so i sold him the silver top one and I now its a dead heat

He is still trying to get a blacktop intake box.

Duz any one know what the funny trumpets in the box are for???

Should i leave them?? :?
or
pull them out???

Click on Search up at the top of the page, type in "trumpet" and press "enter". Oh, and between now and then, try to avoid RedMist

trumpets

Postby tomo1985 » Mon Oct 03, 2005 10:47 pm

I took the chamber off on mine and bought some uni filter socks they work mint on the factory trumpets. The car did feel a lil slower but the sound was great. Now running a k&n filter and pipe as needed to tap the nos in.

how it looks.....

Image

got filters and shes all go!!!

relocated the battery and air temp sensor, removed all factory airbox ducting / resonator box and plan to have some new ducting in place when I get time.

I now have 2 'redundant' air lines, both of which were plumbed into the factory plenum (pictured below)

Image

from what i've read, one is a vacuum hose and the other ISC hose (whatever that is)

my question is this, do I need to filter these hoses, or do they not require filtering?
