AE101 FF To FR

Postby AE101_REAR_DRIVE » Wed Oct 05, 2005 11:41 am

Hey I own a 1992 Toyota Levin AE101 and was wanting to convert it to rear wheel drive not only to be different but I want a rear wheel drive again. Was thinking of using a sub frame froma 4WD carib and fitting a bigger diff making a drive tunnel and getting A series mounts along with a link ecu to solve the dizzy problem.

Can any body help out with anything i have left out.

and what about water pumps??

HELP

What he said ^^

Basically, if you've got tons and tons of spare cash lying around doing nothing, then go for it. Just be prepared for one HELL of a bill (as it sounds like you'd be getting it done by someone else, not doing it yourself).

^^^^ What he said. Bucket loads of cash for some one else to do a conversion.

Go buy yourself an Altezza R200Z. You know you want to.

Or if you insist on a modern FR 2-door 4-seater coupe, that pretty much means a Supra.

Or go old school and get an AE86 Trueno or Levin.

honest question - why?

or you could get a nice s15 for the cash you're going to spend, and it would be a lot nicer and have better resale value than an old levin converted to RWD

Becasue im a toyota man through and through and would like a modern rear wheel drive 4 cylinder 4AGE not a 3SGE plus theres less screwing round getting a 4AGE to fit as one came with the car.

If it came with a 3SGE I would use that but it didn't. But with the money I have it seems very possible was thinking about boring out the motor to 1800 to give it that little bit extra and still keeping the N/A theme with the quad throttles.

Using an AE100 series 4wd carib rear end with bigger diff head most likely F series cause some of them come already LSD and have seen them at 4.3 ratio.

Construction of a drive tunnel isn't a hard. The hard part will be the fire wall / Gearbox tunnel but once constructed and fitted will be rebuilding engine my self and installation my self. ECU will be an auto elctrician and then it's off to get complied and tuned.

I have know idea what the power will be when bored out but the pistons will be direct from TOM's not custom made as I have more faith in TOM's gear than a one off set of pistons.

Lets just say it would be cool to drive a levin and drift round the corner with the hand brake off.

actually there'd be less hassle with an Altezza 3SGE because it's already rear wheel drive, and its cheaper to get a 3S-w5* bellhousing than a 4a-w5* bellhousing or a 4age t50. Also does a 13 year old car really count as modern?

what makes you think a carib subframe is going to fit into the back of your car? it would probably be a similar task to build a custom frame or swap floors. Also a carib frame almost certainly wont fit an F series diff. Maybe an st185 torsen diff? Except I think they're a ridiculous ratio (like 2.7:1 or something)

Well, if you're lucky you might get as much as 170hp out of it, which should make it about as fast as a slightly modified ae86, given the weight discrepancies :)

Lets just say it would be cool to drive a levin and drift round the corner with the hand brake off.

That's an awesome reason for doing this, it really is.

Im using the carib sub frame for parts im not intending them to bolt up but it gives me an entire rear wheel drive system from an AE100 series as they are along the same lines.

The F series will not bolt up I know this having seen the differences in size but I plan on making it fit. It is a large diff and from experience they are tough buggers to brake.

Also on the same note imagine a 4.3 ratio L.S.D behind an 1800cc 20V 4AGE thats more than enough get up and go.

The bell housing will be custom as like you said I plan on using a w55 as they are easy to find, cheap and reliable.

Im not using a 3SGE becasue I don't want to have to buy another engine especially somthing as specific as an Altezza 3SGE.

Sorry your right 13 years isn't modern what I meant was a newer car than an AE86 which are as hard to find as rocking horse poo now days (well in chch any way).

At the end of the day, its your money, your time and your car, so its your call. I think it would be great to see someone actually do this, as so many people have wanted to, but given up on the idea when presented with the extreme costs, time and effort involved.

If you're able to get it done with any degree of success, you'll have a very, VERY unique car on your hands :)

sounds like youre in the run for spending shitloads of cash (as said) especially if you are paying someone else to do the fab work (could buy an alteza easy imo), but it would be pretty cool to own. Make sure you talk to your cert engineer early in the process as you are modding the car vastly really.
I wernt aware 4ages can be bored out to 1800. There used to be a stroker kit on the market to do that though.
u say its easier mounting/keeping with the 4age because it came with one...im assuming you mean easier than finding a good 3s motor as you will be mounting it n/s rather than e/w anyway (which would not be any harder in a 3s motor)
Wather pump wise (as in your origonal post), why do you think the standard one wont do?
good luck, must post pic's if you do it.
Cant believe im still a member here.

Will post picks when work comences.

Yeah Im only using the 4AGE instead of my prefered 1G GTEU as I already have a 4AGE and the stroker kit comes from TOM's still being made to this day and I think its 1783cc but whos counting

I understand what is involved in undertaking a project like this as such my budget is quite big the time to do this and finish the car is undetermined as it's been done before but not in N/Z from what I have heard.

I have a certifier lined up and the work will be being done by his workshop this has been discounted as the work i do involves me giving him alot of taxi certification work.

and yes when it's up and running and broken in it will drift at Ruapuna and it will do standys with the handbrake off.

Long live rear drive.

so before it was overbore pistons, and now it's a stroker kit? choose! a 7AFE bottom end will make it 1.8L also.

it's been done before but not in N/Z from what I have heard.

You reckon? The father of a member on this forum has done it, except atleast they did something worthwhile with the engine rather than keeping it 4age.

and yes when it's up and running and broken in it will drift at Ruapuna and it will do standys with the handbrake off.

That is so awesome man, really.

Good work... if you have a certifier on your 'team' it'll save a lot of hassle. I'm taking it you've seen the 1JZ powered on on HO3?

It's deffinatly over sized 20V pistons according to the info I have.
I have heard about the 7AFE conversion to 16v but not 20V.

And as for not being done before in N/Z before. Your the first person to even say they might know of some one who has done it. I have rung round most engineers who have dealt with cars and have all said no to and AE101 it's been done to an AE92 levin but not an AE101.

And as for the worth while engine comment I don't need stupid power as the car isn't like a supra or skyline which weighs almost a ton and a half so it will be more than fine with the 4AGE which used to power it pretty damn good.

Power to weight man.

power to weight? hahaha
that's exactly the problem with an ae101, the engine is good, but the car is too heavy. They weigh what, around 1100kg? You really need a decent 4agte to make one move well, although in my opinion you'd be better off with a 3sgte.

PM matt dunn if you want to know a little more about the 1JZ-GTE powered ae101 that his dad built. Apparently most engineers that you've spoken to aren't particularly "in the know" :P

PS. click the link in my sig to view my profile - I agree 100% on the importance of power to weight, but the problem is a 4age isn't enough power for the weight of an ae101
