fuse

Postby scope » Thu Oct 06, 2005 12:39 pm

hello

i'm really new to car audio to hence this question. a mate of mine is going to borrow my amp (i haven't used it yet) and i don't want him blowing it, in his last setup he had just ran a power cable to his amp without any type of fuse and i'm pretty sure that it's best to put a fuse on that cable. so can anyone tell me what type of fuse to use that would be good!!

thanks

fuse or circuit breaker within 30cm of the battery. and of a lower rating than the cable will sustain eg an 8 gauge cable will sustain approx 50 amps so a 40amp fuse would be good etc etc etc

easiest way is to go to repco an audio store or somewhere similar and get an amp install pack, they are usually not that expensive and they come with everything eg power cable fuse etc etc

get out ur amp manual it will have the correct fuse ampage in the wiring diagram

For Example My Sony XMD1000p5 (now has) 150A Blade Fuse (what it was sposed to have on there in the first place), to start off with i was running 30-60Amp fuses (factory 4gauge fuses) and i would pop them left right and centre so dont think its a good idea putting smaller 1's on there than what they suggest cause u will spend alot of money and time replacng the bastards, definetly fuse the power lead though

do not put any main power fuse bigger than a 40A on this amp (thats what the suggestion is in the manual)

That sounds about right for a 4x80 RMS amp.

Follow the manuals guidance.

Just use a 40A blade fuse right next to the battery and you'll be sweet.

Make sure its sealed from water though. (making the assumption your battery is still under the bonnet.)

Yes a 40A fuse will be fine for this. In fact, it's what you should use, as that's what the fuses total on the amp itself.

fuses are rated at what they will supply constantly eg a 40 amp fuse will supply up to 40 amps of current consistantly.

it takes roughly double to blow it... eg 80 amps to blow a 40 amp fuse..... an 80 amp dead short is a lot
