Engine hp at the wheels

Postby Armourermike » Wed Oct 12, 2005 12:14 pm

Hey team,
Does anyone know a conversion from engine hp to rear wheel hp?
My black top has been dyno'd at 186hp at the engine. Any idea on what it would be at the wheels?

most dynos don't show engine hp? thats really odd

it all depends on the car as to how much is lost through the drivetrain

to save guessing and crap, put it on a rollign road dyno, like torque performance, and you will know definately how much it has at the wheels

What you need to do is go to Southern Institute Of Technology and enrole in stage 1 mechanics. Then they will give you a 1 week lesson in thermal dynamics which is what you need to learn the equation to do it.

I have the unit standards but god knows where they are.

See above for quick fix e.g Dyno

If it was dynoed on an engine dyno the best educated guess is around 10% loss so 169hp. If it was dynoed on a chassis dyno with a fudge factor, you need to find out what the fudge factor is.

See, we have two type of people on these forums.

The guys who goto the effort of going to learn thermal dynamics, and
The guys who just ask on toyspeed, because we have the likes of Fivebob, Anth, Vvega, etc who know the answers already.

I know which costs less ;).

I am inundated with excellent information once again! If you need any info on fixing your automatic weapons or pistols feel free to ask, thats me area of expertise, not thermal dynamics

I used my free connection to the internet on my free modem and free P.C give him my information which was learned at S.I.T which uses Zero fees and cost me $62 instead of $2000+

So my total was $62 to learn what I can prove I know.

Most people to get onto Toy Speed are.

MODEM $99
CONNECTION $80 per month
COMPUTER $1000 at least for a new PC
(based on high speed connection)

Hmmm and what Fivebob, Anth, Vvega so special that they know engine thermal dynamics.

Im not saying they don't but claiming that they know as much as some one who has done the hard yards and study is a big claim or is it on your say so??

Gee no wonder people round here think your full of it.

I have said my peice and so has CozmoNZ but he never really answered the question did he.

And you did? :?. FWIW I know so little about engine thermal dynamics that I can't even begin to comprehend it's relevance to the question at hand.

Cost me $0 to get a computer and get on the net.

not my internet connection, computer was brought for me.. so.. yeh

im just being a dick, calm down eh? i did a automotive course too, learnt probbaly the excact same shit you did, big whoop. and im sure theres some information, in the big pile of books, in the corner, about the formula he rqeuires.

im just saying, its easier to type it into that little *google* bar, to get the outcome. Needless to say, the question has already been answered. By anth.

Its fully dependant on the dyno and dyno operator.

Stop bitchin about thermodynamics. It has nothing to do with it. This calculation is purely human.

I'm presuming you havent had this engine on an engine dyno. A hub or rolling road dyno measures HP (or attempts to) at the wheels. As such to get an estimate of flywheel HP the dyno operator will have had to put in a correction factor to estimate flywheel HP. My guess is that unless you're running some substancial modifications he's given you're FWD gearbox something silly like a 25% drag. It makes the dyno operator look good, as he's made more HP than you got from going to the next dyno operator. However its very false.

Out of a blacktop with bolt ons you should be expecting around the 130-135 wheel HP on a dynapac, slightly more, slightly less on other dynos.
The answer is Helmholtz!

Ok Thermal dynamics allows you to calculate engine horsepower loss and drivetrain loss into KW or HP or PS by using amount of gas used, air sucked in, temp of water, size of bore, stroke and how big the fly wheel is devided buy the ratos in the gearbox and final drive instead of using a dyno.

Much more accurate than using a rolling road and taking off 10% well thats what I think any way.

[Don't quote factors involved in formula untill I find my unit standards and post accuratly what it is]

He didn't ask what he should get he asked how to convert any HP to rear wheel drive HP

And he got an answer without your meaningless bitching and moaning.
If you can't provide an exact knowledgable answer to a question posted then post and moan about it?

If things were as simple as quickly going to do a full mechanical engineering course to answer a question when a person has it then why bother having a Technical Question section on the boards?

yeah he got told to go an get it dyno'd like you would do Silent_Knight you should just stay silent the adults are talking now. Haha and you think I did a mechanical engineering course??? NO NUMB NUTS "MECHANICS COURSE"

Learn to read you fudge facker

the figurs are for a 4AGE

times your horsepower by 0.78 for manual
times your horsepower by 0.86 for Automatic

These ratios are what S.I.T in christchurch use to determine HP at rear wheels and teach to students.

It differs from car to car but thats what they use for 4AGE.

Finally a proper answer to the question instead of duhhhh chuck it at a dyno and work it out!!!!!

Right now calm down little boy...no need to get your knickers in a twist.

I supose you think this answer to the question was just as brilliant then....

Mate better than no answer at all like you showed us it's possible to do.

Get over the fact you know nothing and you will go far some day.

Dude you own a soarer and think your cool where as no one on here really cares what they drive weather it's a Honda or a Toyota it's a car.

The reason theres a tech question board is for you and you alone who knows nothing and insist on asking.

You know what I mean.

Anthony, redmist, silent knight....
Can you guys all STFU please.

This guy is doing a course!

Perhaps if you start begging for forgiveness now, and bow to his superior knowledge, he might have some pity and answer your tech questions in the future.

So why are you judging him, based on driving a soarer then?
