Noisey C160

Postby boxxy » Mon Oct 10, 2005 11:06 pm

hey, i have a ae111 corolla gt that has a c160 6 speed gearbox in it.

After my head unit buggering up, im noticing all the noises my car makes, as i have nothing else to listen too.

There is a horrible "munching / grinding" noise comming from the gearbox on de-accelleration - seems to be worse in 3rd that any other gear. This noise has been getting louder and louder over the last 3 months or so and is begining to piss me off.

The other thing I've noticed is the shift of the box is not as nice as it used to be, when "changing hard" i some times cannot find 2nd at all.. its like its solidly blocked out - only to be found after getting 3rd or 4th.

is this common for the c160, or have i got myself an expensive problem?

cheers for any help,

Tim

Is it any easier if you double the clutch?
If it is....well its pretty obvious what the problem is.
Mind you my Toyota C series box is real weird at getting into 2nd, you cant 'chuck' it in no matter how hard you try, it kinda hits a wall then glides on in. Its only got 50000km on it...so maybe its the same design as that.

nzcelica, i wouldnt say your gearbox has anything at all similar with a c160...

being yaknow, 4wd... a 5speed, bolting to an e seris engine, yaknow..

plus your gearlinkages are clunky as hell, C160's are rather smooth (in comparasion). yours is starlet style :)

not to mention the shit you give yours... or i occasionally have (sorry about that... lol)

Looks like you have worn out one of the syncro's, or one (proberly 3rd gear ) tooth or two on the gear itself. Mine started doing that just before I blew the Crown and Pinion gears.... oops I mean completely f#@ked them!!! :(

Yeah, after a while they all seem to do that. I have been told that its just the way the gearbox is put together. The 'gate' of the gearshifts are not completely up and down, but slightly off to the side. This, I'm told, is because of the position of reverse.

They look kinda like this:

Image

A: Is what you would think it would look like

B: Is more realistic, which makes it harder to get into 2nd gear.

This is especially hard at high rpm/load, and really pisses me off when I'm racing and I'm going into the hairpin at Puke Track and I can't get 2nd gear!!!

My adive is to get your gearbox looked at by a specialist before it breaks down completely. :D

depends i suppose in that case then...

you also rape the shit outta yours though... my bz-v still had a mint gearbox... and that had 130odd km's on it, where has douglas 50k corolla is starting to see wear...

But from what i hear, the 6speeds kill themselves quicker than the 5speeds (5speeds seem to destroy syncros), 6speeds eat themselves completely :D.

But yeh, ill be quiet now :P

Did this today, the dude says the c160s have a problem with excessive wear on the gearset during deaccelleration due to the high compression of the mighty blacktop.

He also said he probably wouldnt do a warrentee job on it yet, but he can pull it apart and fix my syncros, and replace the gearset if there is any / excess wear.

I would get it fixed now before it craps itself and does anymore damage. :D Could be expensive! :(

Try Nulon G70, fixed 2nd/5th synchro problem on mine, on the package they claim that it will make it quiter aswell, if your one is LSD (torsen) box then you are probalby running GL5 oil, wich is not very good for syncrhos...

Oh yeah gotta love it when that happens.

Even better is when you go to pay the bill of $100 or whatever and you see the bill being forwarded to the warranty company of $1200  (been there)
