AE111 Ignition system... what should I do?

Postby AE111_modifier » Wed Oct 12, 2005 3:35 pm

Hay all, I am wanting to do somthing with my igntion system... I have two things in mind. Either I can replace the factory distributor, get a good set of leads and an MSD coil. Or I could go down the multi coil road, I was thinking link ignitor, MSD coils, MSD leads.

Will multi coil make more power... or am I better off saving my $$$

Save your money. You don't need to worry about ignition until you're significantly far along in the modification process. Unless you've already done your intake, cold air, exhaust, headwork etc, then you don't need to alter your ignition system.

I've put an MSD coil on my BZ-G. Give's it a better spark for sure.
Others here will say its just because the factory coils & coil lead brake down that you notice such a difference. Hard to say. I know you can get a factory coil for them from repco for about $30 which is a fraction of the price of a MSD one. Also if you want a better spark try some Iridium plugs, NGK & Denso do them & some 7mm leads. You could also fit a earthing kit to improve the voltage going to the coil http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/0001 ... 909552.htm I've fitted one and it went from 13.8v @ idle to 14.4v. These are all relativley cheap mods & can be fitted by yourself. You wont get massive power gains but every little bit helps with N/A tuning

isnt going to oil filled coil a backward step *shrug*
if you end up with a fully tunable ecu that can do multi coil itd be worth it... but only as a xtra after everything else

What do you use to trigger it? MSD?

With a primary resistance like that you wouldn't want to run it with a factory type igniter.

AE111_modifier,
What other mods do you have,
are you using a link ECU or standard?
You mentioned a link igniter,
with that I'd reccomend a bosch HEC715 or 716,( cant remember which one has the standard output terminal)

I just run it with all the standard moduel etc, My old work mate had a AE101 & he was also runnig one with no problems.
They're designed to be a direct replacement for the factory coil, no nead for other bits althought you would probarbly get even better results if you also used one of these http://www.msdignition.com/ignition_4_6200.htm

My workmate tryed a bosch coil befor the MSD & said the bosch was no better than standard

Hey, other engine mods I have are as listed below:
K&N pod
2.5" mandrel bent exhaust
Kelford race billet cams
Link plus computer
TRD head gasket
TRD valve springs
Toda adjustable cam wheels
3 angle valve gind
Heat wrapped extractors
Lightened flywheel
NGK spark plug leads
Silver tipped spark plugs

Just want to make sure everything in the combustion chamber is being lit up. A link igniter and four bosch coils is sounding like a good option at the moment. But the big question is will it actually make a worth while difference? No point of spending cash here when I could be laying it into something more usefull... Speaking of useful things who here has seen those apexi inline cable operated exhaust valves... pretty cool just put a dual rear muffler setup on, one muffler straight through the other baffled. When the police ask to check your vehicle for exhaust noise simply flick the slider in the cabbin to the baffled muffler and its sweet as for you and slightly confused for big brothers goons.

Hello, My car is not running very well at the moment because the link plus needs to be installed... I am going to give it ago after my exams finish. After I install the computer it will get dyno tunned... I'll post the results up on here if you want. Should go pretty hard after that though :-)

I was looking at your profile... that’s a pretty grunty levin you have... how did you modify the gear ratios... are they TRD or another aftermarket variant? Also does removing the wing affect the handling? Surely it must produce down force to help the rear wheel grip around corners, after all there isn't much weight in the rear end of a levin.

The guy i bought the car off did most of the major mods to it, He used to use it as a track car, he also had an AE101 as a rally car. He brought it out with him from japan where he had the mods done.
You know how toyota fwd always shag the 3rd gear with a bit of abuse, so he replaced it, dont know what with but its really short, taps out at about 140kph rather that the usual 155-160. Its great for track but not so good for drag.
Yeah having no rear wing does affect the down force, he had a masive T wing on there but took it off and i havent replaced it, like the look of the toms wing for them, looks good with nothing to.
Will be keen to see your dyno result once you get that link sorted. I just had an apexi safc2 installed in mine, got an extra 6kW right through the rev range. Can really notice the difference at low revs, it was running quite lean before causing some detonation which i think has maybe blowen the head gasket, got to get it checked one day.
