What oil do u use for ur 85/6 4AGE? to all owners

Postby vindrft04 » Sat Oct 15, 2005 11:02 am

Looking to try something better so will do a survey here....

Thought this may not be an ideal approach due to the variety engine standard so i would ask 3 things to be specified.

Engine level - Standard vs light/heavy modified

Engine Oil used - Can be more than 1 brand

Your opinions - if any - this may include a personal comparison with other's types u may have tried

I've visited various lubricant manufacturer's website and their so called product recommendation tools gives only the basic selections.

My objectiuve is to gather a collective set of opinions before deciding a product, Instead of Castrol GTX/Protec as suggested, would Castrol R 20-50 give me alot more in return as it state its for older engine?

Protection and suitability comes first (due to the age of the engine), performance 2nd.

Thanks if u could take part in the survey.

imo, kept at the height set by factory as overfilled and underfilled create their own problematic issues.

again, imo, I'd just keep to the most up to date api rated oil, the recommended api for cars as old as the 16v 4age is well below these, so current stuff, by tests alone will give good protection for these old engines.
If its high mileage or burns oil i'd stay away from full synthetics. Brand wise I often use penzoil, but I go by the api more than brand often also.
If you were keeping with castrol, for the engine nothing wrong with the protec/gtx2

Im sure theres other opinions out there however...
Cant believe im still a member here.

I had Valvoline XLD Lo-Vis 5w-40 in mine, seemed to rev out nicer but also burnt through it fairly quickly. This is on a basically standard engine.

I now run Castrol GTX protec, mainly beacuse its cheap and the engine is getting a bit tired, it feels a little more sluggish when cold etc but doesnt burn it as quick.

yup..... u get what u pay for... the cheaper they are the shorter they last.

having known 4age likes to be rev and since they're getting aged i would though better to use a little expensive oil

and since summer is round the corner, am thinking about giving Castrol R 20w - 50 racing oil a try.

So I use super poos Castrol GTX... Good old $15 for 4L...
Does okay. Doesn't leak through as fast as nice oils...

I see that makes a little more sence. :P

Well I have a 4AGE FXGT blue top. But apart from the stereo I am not allowed to spend money on it except to keep it on the road. So I just put what ever is at the server station, that has ok ratings.
