From memory they have an oil tank under the bonnet (which is not where the engine is!) and I guess that the ill informed could mistake this for a dry sump tank?!! Although maybe I am just looking for an answer to stupidity?!

Some of the import toyota vans have a oil level sensor in the sump,
which when the oil level gets low pumps oil from an external resovior into the sump.

Probably would have been better to build an engine that doesnt' burn oil,

but that what toyota did.

I think it's actually something to do with the fact that the engines are hard to get to or something.

when a car with normal sump doing serious cornering, oil will go and stay in one corner inside the sump due to centrifugal force, so the oil pick up screen will suck air into the oil pump and this is no good. So most of serious race car use dry sump system to overcome this problem, engine is external oil drain, has external oil container and belt driven oil pump.
