RWD: SR20DET vs 3SGTE

Postby KE25-KP30 » Thu Oct 20, 2005 9:51 am

Hey all, i've been doing my research into some sort of swap (dreams at this stage :) ) into the likes of a KE70 or TE71.
Ive been keen on the 3S idea, because of keeping toyota with toyota, also i've already got a W55.

I went to an engineering shop the other day and they quoted $200 to cut, turn 30-odd degrees and take 10mm out of a 1S/2S bellhousing. A custom exhaust manifold's going to be about $500. Firewall will have to have a big hole cut in it, and basically these's a heap more 'custom' work.

From what i've seen, with a RWD SR20, pretty much all that will have to be done(big things anyway) will be mounts and d/shaft, and possibly some tunnel work.

Any ideas/input/whatever would be appreciated, tell me if i'm on the completely wrong track too :D ...Just looking into all the options!! :)

Cheers
Kent

Custom stuff ALWAYS costs more, especially if you break stuff. Ask yourself the question "how much do I value keeping my Toyota all Toyota?" The answer to that can only be decided by you.
Personally I would look for a CA18, a bit cheaper than the SR and supposedly easier to fit.

What he said. CA18's are quite small motors, make 185hp factory, and love to rev. I punished mine when I had my 180sx, it took it, regularly saw the limiter, and I only had to replace the clutch! That, and a lot of gear from bigger Nissan motors simply bolts up.. ie, an SR20 T28 bolts up and will give you a tad over 200hp reliably.

And with the CA18, for 90% of Toyota CA18 conversions that I've seen, you don't need to touch the firewall. You'll also find you can get a CA18DET, 5spd gearbox with loom and ECU for the same price as an SR20 by itself! :)

Having said that I have seen some cheap sr20's on tard me...

But yeah man, not really sure why people are scared to step outside of toyota for their motor... (phat ryme)

Id go ca18, look baddass in an oldschool car and are top motors.
